Half Live,Half Studio Compilation: Ace Frehley had a great musical career first with KISS and then latter in his solo years and he's a well-known and respected musician. With the 12 Picks compilation wich he released in time for the 1996 KISS reunion,he takes a look back at some of his best work wich he included here. Its no secret that Ace influenced many guitar players to pick up a guitar and start playing, but put that aside he's had a great musical career that one can only dream of.12 Picks is 12 songs choosen by Ace himself, from some of his early work with KISS like "Deuce" up to his solo days as "Rip It Out" and Frehley's Comet days as "Trouble Walkin'",wich for fan is a heck of a deal. This was probably more of a cash maker more than anything else,as it only contains 12 songs and a compilation is mostly a cash grab more than anything else.Ace issued his first compilation with 12 Picks and what is interresting with this compilation is that one half of the album is studio and the other half is Live,it is rare to ahve Live songs on a greatest hits but it is a great combinaison. It doesn't really matters,as Ace is great both in the studio and Live. Some songs are really good such as the excellent "Trouble Walking" or the fan favourite "Rock Soliders".A minor complaint i have is that altought "New York Groove" from his 1978 solo debut album was his biggest hit,it isn't included here wich is kind of awkward, except that the track selection is nothing to complaint about. The reason this compilation was named 12 picks is that Ace autographed 12 Picks and they were randomly inserted in the CD sleeve. It was a great idea and to date no one really knows wheter or not all of the picks have been found,so at whatever time and year you are reading this, you might still be able to find one of those picks! Fans of Ace know he's worth it and how good he really is,it could have been better bt it could have been worse.Still because this is one of the only album that cover Ace's entire career i have to give it a four, while normally in most cases it would deserve less. Most of his best work is here really.I find it nice that half is live, half studio that way you know what Ace is like in both ways.A good compilation if you like Ace and just really know him form his KISS days then go for it,if not maybe you should listen to the artist first, then consider 12 Picks.
