A film about classical music and mental illness would normally be a box-office disaster. Yet such was the life-affirming brilliance of director Scott Hicks Shine, the true story of Australian pianist David Helfgott's battle against mental breakdown and his self-expression through Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 3, that the film found an adoring audience. Composer David Hirschfelder faced the extraordinarily difficult task of crafting a score of sufficient maturity to stand beside some of the greatest classical masterpieces ever written. Had he failed the film itself could not have worked, yet work it did, and triumphantly so. This soundtrack album features 34 tracks, 14 by Hirschfelder, the remainder bring his arrangements of the classical selections used in the film. Necessarily, the resulting album is somewhat diverse and even fragmented. Despite this, Hirschfelder has done a remarkable job of assembling the pieces into a musical tapestry, in which his own delicately understated compositions sit comfortably besides Vivaldi, Beethoven and, of course, Rachmaninov, with David Helfgott himself playing on many of the tracks. One of the best Soundtracks:
If you want a great variety of some of most beautiful moving classical pieces, in the movie Shine, you must have this. There is not much to say other than the emotions that you feel with this music is amazing, and it is purely a great listening experience.

One of the best Sondtracks ever:
Great soundtrack...really lets you watch the movie in your head. If you want to hear all the songs they are available on the sequel to this soundtrack: "Shine - The Complete Classics"

GREAT CD!:
The movie is what really inspired me to buy the soundtrack, as that is how it usually goes. I would say this cd is one of the best that I own. The sound is great and the variety is fantastic. I especially love Vivaldi:) However, the only thing i have to complain about is that they dont play the entire songs. I would of loved to here the rest of "prelude in c-sharp minor" (Rachmaninoff)...the thunderstorm backround added a most beautiful touch:)

What a beautiful music!:
Inmediately after watching a part of the movie I decided to buy the CD, not the video. The story by itself could be nice, but the music (the piano, the opera, everything) is just great. I also recommend "Shine. The Complete Classics" one. For Spanish readers: Después de ver tan sólo una parte de la película, decidí comprar el disco, no el video. La historia podría ser agradable, pero la música es simplemente maravillosa (el piano, la ópera, toda la producción). Hay piezas del disco en las que simplemente me "sumerjo" al escucharlas. Es una delicia para los oídos. También recomiendo el disco "Shine. The Complete Classics".

Simply Beautiful:
The Shine soundtrack was a wonderful accompaniment to the movie, and it is a great addition to any classical music library. The music is both uplifting and empowering. But if you buy this CD for only one reason buy it for the magnificent rendition of Vivaldi's Nulla in Mundo Pax Sincera by the angelic-sounding soparano Jane Edwards. Simply beautiful!
