Variety Is the Spice Of Wings: After the dissappointing "Speed Of Sound" Wings make a sudden rebound with "London Town"-the tital cut of whicth was a smooth ballad hit."Cafe On The Leftbank","I've Had Enough" ,the bonus cut "Girls School" and the ultra-funk "Morse Moose And The Gray Goose" give this a stylistic feel not unlike "Band on The Run"-along with the crafted pop of the hit "With A Little Luck",the folky ballad "I'm Carrying",there's Linda's cool little interlude of electronica "Cufflink" and of course the fantastic bonus cut "Mull Of Kintyre"-bagpipes and all.One of my three all-time favorite McCartney/Wings albums and bound to be yours as well!
Some great moments: This was my first Wings album. I had no idea what to expect. having had a listen, I have to tell you McCartney has not faded as a songwriter, at least by 1978. He is as good as he ever was. The highlights are the relaxing title track, the slow-disco of Cafe on the left bank, a very unusual folk song in Girlfriend, the amazign two-fer Backwards traveller and Cuff link, the latter being a fantastic instrumental. Now everyone hates that song because it's a synthesiser instrumental. What these anti-synth people wont tell you is that it has a fantastic melody, some very skilled playing and a great atmosphere, as well as being unusual and pscyhedelic, almost. I find it cery irritating when a song is bashed for being synthetic when it has so many other things to offer. Anway, Don't let it bring you down is a great number with some fantastic flute playing and I also like the two rockers, I've had enough and the Elvis-ish Name and address. My favourite two songs, however, are the hit, With a little luck, very charming and also has soem exclellent instrumental parts, adn Morse Moose adn the Grey Goose, a psychedelic shanty-disco number. It's a masterpiece if you ask me. On the downsides, many of these songs drag on too long wihtout being strong enough to justify their length, With a little luck being an exception. Also, I don't particularly like 'Fmaous Groupies' or 'I'm carrying'. However, other people may view them in a different light. So, in concluson, this is an interesting, chance taking record that, for the most part, pulls off what it sets out to achieve btu does suffer in a few areas. Still, a very worthwhile album, 7.5/10. Unfortunately, I don't have bonus tracks since I have the old vinyl copy.
SWEEEEEET: I just downloaded this album for my dad. I never expected to like it, but it is really cool! Get it now! Seriously dude! Get it. C'mon! You should, man. Just get it. I'm tellin ya.
One of the Best of Wings: If you've never listened to London Town, you are missing out on a real treat. I love all of it.
I am one of those people who think this is one of his best!: For me a very underrated album, it has been always one of my favourites... it has that potential LOVE/HATE condition some of Paul's LP/CD have... Well, I am sorry to say it's pop at it's greatests... and maintain a very good level ALL THROUGH... NO FILLERS HERE! A MUST HAVE FOR ANY TRUE FAN! BUT GOOD FOR EVERYONE TOO! (I do not know why I sound so "commercial" but I have always have had a strong penchant for it... it needs all sorts you know...). HEAR WITHOUT PREJUDICE AND THEN HAVE YOUR OWN OPINION.
