frumpie one piece: Everyone who has ever been in a band on Kill Rock Stars was, at one time, in a band with everyone else on Kill Rock Stars. The Frumpies are the product of the non-Kathleen Hanna members of Bikini Kill as well as one member of Bratmobile, but they don't sound like either one of the aforementioned bands. Even if you didn't love it when Kathi and Tobi sang in Bikini Kill, you could easily like the Frumpies. Their highly creative indie rock noise album certainly isn't as confrontational as Bikini Kill was, but they take care of business just the same. Stories from boring towns about spoiled kids and teenage betrayal are well written, even if you can't always understand the words, and "deep" without being condescending or boastful. The Frumpies are angry, but they don't have to rip out yr heart to show it; They know they can get you right where they want you with just a chord or two.
Zack Wait says "Frumpies are aces!!": This band burns like a stingray and rocks like an atom bomb. It's stupid to think this is anything but Rad City. Good grief.
Punk Rock Feminism At It's Puriest: Frumpies' One-Peice is a compilation disc of all the 24 songs of their 5 7" single releases. Kathi Wilcox shreaks out her vocals beautifully proving there is no need for a multi-million dollar record studio. The Frumpies are the pure definition of what proud indie punk was meant to be, from the upbeat instant hook first song that pulls you in to the beautiful soft vocals Kathi Wilcox is able to produce in songs such as "intertube Tomorrow" and "Eunuch Nights".
AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME: I absolutely love this cd. Frumpies include members of Bikini Kill (Kathi, Billy and Tobi) and Molly from ex-Bratmobile and the Peechees. Very loud, especially when Tobi sings. Extremely punk.
...In Which Old Hands Keep The Beat: *Frumpie One Piece* presents us with the typical profile for a class of 90s bands not properly permitting of "general acclaim": more-or-less evanescent outfits, popping in and out of existence without the knowledge of VH1 or select circles in America's hippest towns. One might think that the formula "Bikini Kill - Kathleen Hanna + the East Bay's Molly and members of Bratmobile" would permit of nearly endless variations on the theme of "women in rock", but in reality there is only one note being sounded in this collection of *realia*: the young lady's need to define her love interest in a way not permitting of "possibilities of combination" pleasing to the *gebildet* ear, that one with the easy familiarity permitted by those images purveyed to residents of cities of the future present rather than the "gearing" of conurbations operational in the objective genitive. Are the threads of this record too tightly woven, though? Is what is being delivered more exciting than the experiences which informed it? Perhaps not, as it is to be remembered that the "genius" appearing in a definite capacity on this record has the relational property of being a joke funny enough for any particular set of circumstances. That is to say, the artistic patina of this material is much stronger than any "ethological" interpretation which could be forced upon it: this material is "subliterary" only at a speed permitting something other than the aesthetic pleasure of the disinterested observer. These are not instructors in a school for mechanics with speech pathologies, but procurers of a product too licit for this present age: and such creatures may in fact take you out, young man.
