Lorsqu'il fonde Traffic en 1967, Stevie Winwood n'a que 19 ans mais il s'est déjà fait un nom et une réputation au sein du Spencer Davis Group, avec lequel il a décroché une poignée de hits. Animé par la volonté d'explorer de nouveaux territoires musicaux, il s'entoure de musiciens partageant son état d'esprit et signe d'abord le très bon Mr Fantasy. Un an plus tard, Traffic poursuit sa voie avec l'éponyme Traffic, expérimentant avec bonheur un mélange de rock, de soul, de psychédélique et de jazz. Jamais à court de créativité, Winwood et ses complices savent s'adapter sans problème à tous types de musiques.
