[.ca] Schoolhouse Funk

It is Funky...:
This album starts rather slowly after a very nice intro. The first 3 or 4 songs can get rather boring. After, that it starts to pick up rather nicely. The dopest track on here is toast to the boogie, where 3 students are introuducing the students in the talent show. I only wish my high could have been this funky. The album definetly grows on you because it is so real, and ends up being very refreshing to listen to. Every track just wants to make you :-)

Absurdist Colleston For Soul Music Fanatics:
First thing first, this album is weird. It is a compilation of funk and soul, (mostly) instumental music recorded by High School marching bands in the seventies. It was compiled by the mysterious Motorcycle John (aka DJ Shadow). Most of the tracks are rather tedious and dull. They are instrumental songs in which the instruments are played badly. Really badly. One may recognize covers of classic instrumentals such as "Scorpio" (originally recorded by Dennis Coffey) and "Chameleon" (which was originally by Herbie Hancock). "Cisco Kid" features a lifeless High School chorus. The highlight of this disc comes in the interludes as some truly old school brothers take you deep down into what's happenning. I liked this album for its camp value. It brought me back to my days of High School pep rallies, talent shows, and football game half-times. It is similar to the equally absurd collection "Bombay The Hard Way" which was compiled by DJ Shadow cohort The Automator and featured soundtracks to Bollywood films. "Schoolhouse Funk" is better than "Bombay The Hard Way" in its goal of seeking camp infused charm through often weird music. Quality ambient tackiness.
