Great Album: Siren is a captivating effort by Walt in many ways. The tunes are very creative throughout, and Weiskopf's arranging skills are showcased nicely with the nonet. Walt's playing on this album can only be called ferocious. His unique tone quality, combined with his seemingly unlimited energy and supply of ideas, makes for some highly exciting listening. The rhythm section plays beautifully, as is to be expected from these guys. Walt's brother Joel provides a counter-balance solo-wise with his tasty, and comparitively minimalistic blowing. In fact, all the soloists sound wonderful. There are no weak links in this ensemble, but there's also no question who's in charge. Siren is my favorite Walt Weiskopf release, but Song for My Mother offers more high-quality writing and playing. Also be sure to check his sextet recordings, and his latest release on Criss Cross, Man of Many Colors (my 2nd favorite).
