From Amazon.com: One of the greatest ironies surrounding This Is Spinal Tap is that it's actually better than many of the recordings it parodies. Songs like "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight," "Hell Hole," "Heavy Duty," and even "Stonehenge" are fun, 1980s-style rockers that any closet hair-band fan will enjoy, and "Sex Farm" and "Big Bottom" are simply hilarious by any standard. There's also the hippie-drippy "Listen to Me (the Flower People)" (even funnier if you've seen Rob Reiner's film of the same title), although Michael McKean and Christopher Guest singing "Cry, Cry, Cry All the Way Home" is sadly absent. The CD does lose some of its entertainment value if you haven't seen the film, but its mix of comedy and unabashed pop metal makes it the perfect party album. --Genevieve Williams
WOAH eleven: What I like the most about this album is the awesomeness of the loudness of the speakers. I dont know what they did, but it's like (and dont call me crazy) but it sounds like the amps go to eleven? maybe maybe not kick tail album
Wisen Up: Yeah for all you people saying how This is Spinal Tap "disgraced" the band, there was no real band Spinal Tap. This is Spinal Tap invented the band. The movie made up the band to make fun of other bands. Some people are really stupid. But its a good CD
Spinal Tap. Great Movie. Great Soundtrack.: After hearing the music in This Is Spinal Tap (one of my favorite films), I almost instantly went out and bought the soundtrack. Even though some of these songs have silly lyrics and funny riffs to go with it (eg. "Cups & Cakes" haha!), I still love this rockin' music. I was so suprised at how well these brilliant actors played such good music. Some of my favorite tracks on this album are "Hell Hole", "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock you Tonight", "America", "Big Bottom" and the brand new "Christmas With The Devil"! If you liked what you heard in the classic film, then definitley buy this. It is one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. Spinal Tap!
Great Cover!: Spinal Tap the movie is an all-time great comedy. Listening to the songs in full, you can "channel" these great characters for great laughs... and great music period! For a good laugh *today*, look next to the Spinal Tap cover picture (on this webpage), and click on "see larger picture." :-). St. Hubbins: This is the demo cover, right?! Manager: No, this is it, this is the cover. Nigel: I see... it's black. Yes... you look at it and say, "How much more black could it be?" And the answer is, "None. None more black." These days, Spinal Tap could probably get away with the original cover, as described by the publicist (Fran Drescher): "A woman on all fours, greased up, with a dog collar around her neck, and a man's glove in her face, asking her to smell the glove?!!" St. Hubbins: We're *making fun* of that stuff! I mean, if we were serious, I'd see your point. But we don't *really* want her to smell the glove! Nigel: Yes we do. St. Hubbins: Well, I mean, not *over and over*! Okay... I'm just quoting the movie, and almost every line is quote out loud funny. The DVD is the same price as the cd, so I would highly recommend getting the movie first... and the cd second -- nothing else is "more black!" A quick funny story: In an interview, Harry Shearer and Michael McKean discussed recent Spinal Tap concerts. The two, and Christopher Guest, dress up as their "A Mighty Wind" characters (folk group "The Folksmen" )-- and open for themselves! The topper? The fans boo The Folksmen off the stage!! The group goes backstage, changes gear, and kicks it as - "direct from Hell" - Spinal Tap!!!
Crank It To 11!: I pondered wether or not to write this review as a parody. As if the band were real. To go along with the movie. Nah. What was a great parody in film, is also a great parody in music. And just like the movie and some reviews there, I am surprised, and somewhat bemused, when people think that it was real. The movie and the music that is included here on this CD. It just goes to show how perfectly Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, and Rob Reiner achieved their goal of trying to make it seem real and come off that way. A lot of people were duped, and still are to this day. The music isn't bad at all, even if it tries to be at times. There are sounds in Spinal Tap's music that sound like The Who and Led Zeppelin and others. Proudly boasting themselves as England's loudest band ever, the guys don't disappoint on this nostalgic trip back to a brilliant movie and a time when music was just fun. Guest, McKean, and Shearer all wrote the music on this disc and that's another great plus for their talent. They wrote the music and played their own instruments. These guys are dedicated to their craft. And still are, especially if you have seen "A Mighty Wind". The band members of Spinal Tap consisted of David St. Hubbins(McKean), who is the band's vocalist and one of two main guitarists. Nigel Tuffnel(Guest), is the other lead guitarist of the band, and Derek Smalls(Shearer), is the band's bass player. Being in the band isn't easy as they have gone through 37 musicians in their history. They began life as The Originals, before becoming Spinal Tap, and the music here gives an overall view of their "hits" and their "sound". The earliest is "Listen To Me(The Flower People)", a trippy little '60's song that is a complete 180 from the remainder of the album. The band became known as the loudest, and in some circles, the most talentless, band in England. Whatever you think, you can't resist the hilariousness of "Big Bottom", the classic tune that has lyrics that prelude to "My pink torpedo". Then there is "Sex Farm", and really, can you go wrong?. Many of these song titles have more zest and character and fun in them than in most of the type of music they are parodying. "Stonehenge", while the oddest concoction from the band, is still interesting to hear. Even funnier is how the "Stonehenge" concept idea tanked in the movie. And there lies the one problem this CD has going for it. If you haven't seen the movie and don't know anything about the music or characters, then you will be lost and not appreciate it in the proper way. Even though their is more than could probably be included here and in future releases, their reputation as having little talent gets in the way of future material. The CD is a great, hilarious companion to one of the best and funniest films of all time.
