[.ca] Q: The Musical Biography of Quincy Jones

From Amazon.co.uk:
The stunning four-CD Musical Biography of Quincy Jones is a great companion to Quincy Jones' excellent autobiography. It's also a great compilation of his eclectic genius, which has touched everyone from bebopper Clifford Brown to hip-hop rapper Ice-T. The Grammy Award-winning composer and producer has something for everybody here. His jazz sides include his first recorded trumpet solo on "Kingfish" with the great vibraphonist Lionel Hampton. There's also his swinging composition "Stockholm Sweetnin'" and his hip arrangements for Peggy Lee, Count Basie, Sarah Vaughan and Miles Davis. Film buffs will love Jones' swinging soundtrack music, including the Latin lilt of "Soul Bossa Nova" from Austin Powers, the gritty vocals of Ray Charles on "In the Heat of the Night", the bluesy "Miss Celie's Blues (Sister)" from The Color Purple and the hilarious "Sanford & Son Theme (The Street Beater)". Then, there's Michael Jackson's mega-hit Thriller and Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me to the Moon" and some long-lost gems, such as the Brothers Johnson's immortal rendition of Shuggie Otis's spacey classic, "Strawberry Letter 23", Lesley Gore's bubblegum tune, "You Don't Own Me" and the all-star track, "We Are the World". Jones's best work as a solo artist includes his slick renditions of Benny Golson's "Killer Joe" Herbie Hancock's lush "Tell me a Bedtime Story" and the rarely-heard ballad "Everything Must Change". This collection summarises Quincy Jones's brilliant career, and it showcases the best of our musical heritage. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Chronique amazon.fr:

The Dude Throws Down:
This is the title of the 4th in the 4 CD in the boxed set - a chronicle of music from 1953 onwards. His talent is intensely felt from track 1, CD 1......and doesn't let up! At 23 Q was recognised by Gillespie as talented .. and on this set you hear the best. I spent my Thanksgiving day cooking & listening and you can be sure of giving a life long wonderful gift - to yourself or anyone from 14 to 94. The only question you will have about this set is how did you miss this concentrated genius spreading his energy. Jazz, hip hop and musical scores and so much more- Heat of the Night to Austin Powers- Bossa Nova TV shows- Ironside; Frank Sinatra, Bono, Michael Jackson and Hampton. And you wonder why my husband and 5 sons said the dinner was the best? This set has a most reasonable price and well worth at least twice as much - Thank-you QJ.

QTASTIC!!!!!!:
can't even begin to put into words the depth & Flavor that Quincy Jones Brings.just reading off the Names alone is a Who's Who in Music Past,Present & Future.Arrangements,Production & Musicianship is Incredible here.He connects to Me like very few Producers before or since have been able to do.I've Enjoyed the Albums He has Produced The Talent He has Worked with His Film Scores & Soundtracks His Qwest Label Artists & The Vibe He has brought.Quincy Jones is One of the Greatest Musical Minds the World Over has ever known.enjoy

Incredible collection of music history:
Jones's musical biography is a history of American music. The variety and depth of the music compiled on these CDs is amazing.

Great material, excellently remastered:
This collection runs the gamut of pop and jazz musical styles. When songs differed between the single and album version, the single version is used. For a Rhino box set, this title has excellent remastering. Instead of the usually over-bright presentation, Bernie Grundman is the remastering engineer here -- and he treats these tracks with a slight hand, allowing the original musicality of the master tapes shine through. You probably don't have these tracks sounding this good elsewhere in your collection (unless you own the Grundman remastered Michael Jackson albums).

Great collection:
The wide array of music in this collection is amazing - I've always enjoyed his later albums (The Dude, Back on The Block) but this collection opened up the depth of his earlier work to me. I had originally ordered this from Amazon, but cancelled it after I found it at a discount club (Costco)...
