From Amazon.com: Making its belated first appearance on CD, this 1967 session finds trumpeter Donald Byrd picking up some of the pieces of his estimable hard-bop career before he veered off into fusion and atmospherics. His third effort in partnership with acrid-toned alto saxophonist Sonny Red (a.k.a. Sylvester Kyner) settles into a soulfully relaxed groove on the opening title cut (which drummer Billy Higgins, in a rare moment of verbosity, peppers with funky spoken declarations) and sustains an attractively even-tempered sound. The album includes graceful renditions of the standards "Secret Love" and "My Ideal" and two well-turned originals by pianist Cedar Walton, who is featured in the rhythm section with bassist Walter Booker. Nothing earthshaking here, but an enjoyable outing nonetheless. --Lloyd Sachs
She's A Beauty...: Yeah, the girl on the cover is adorable (you should see the gatefold on my vinyl) but it's what's inside that counts. When I first saw this album I assumed it was later period *blaxploitation* Byrd like that of "Street Lady" or "Stepping..." but this is straight-ahead jazz. This transitional album shows Byrd moving toward modal jazz and even hinting avant-garde while still firmly planted in the blues. Much more "serious" sounding than his later, funk-riddled Blue Note projects. Originally released in 1967, this is the first time this music has been issued on CD.
...yes, yall!!!...: ...i have that 'best of' collection, yall know the one, where he has that caricature of himself blowin his horn on the cover...come on, erbody's got that one!!! so i was expectin somethin jazzy, but from the funk/fusion side... it aint here! instead this is the jazz!! the title cut is a monster!! i didnt know he had it in him like that...bruh byrd is talented...but if you lookin for some of that 'spaces and places' type of stuff, then you aint gonna find it here...this is that real thang!....
