[.ca] Live in Hollywood: Aquarius

From Amazon.co.uk:
Although the cover to Live In Hollywood shows a slim-line and cleanshaven Jim Morrison shoehorned into the tightest leather trousers legally available, the truth was, that by the time of these performances on Sunset Boulevard (July 21st 1969 to be precise), Mr Mojo had become a rambling bearbellied beardy whose taste for liquor and ladies--not to mention an on-stage propensity for stroaking goats and undoing his flies--was apparently getting in the way of what was being said into the microphone. Mindful that the tapes were rolling during these shows (The Doors' were preparing their Absolutely Live album, subsequently released in 1970 and long out-of-print), Morrison restrained himself from asking members of the crowd to "love my ass", although Ray Manzareks' vocal stretch on the underwhelming blues-by-numbers "Close To You " and an unexplained instrumental version of "Peace Frog" must have given the old miscreant an opportunity to nip out for a quick spot of depravity. In fact, these mixing-desk quality performances--part of a long series of unreleased live shows being personally vetted and released by the three surviving members of the band--find The Doors at the height of their self-discipline. Even if the live renditions never come close to the venomous dread of the original studio versions ("Break On Through", as ever, is the most glaring casualty) 13 hypnotic minutes of "Light My Fire", the apocalytical rock poetry of "When The Music's Over" and the undervalued blues-waltz of "Universal Mind" all show why The Doors' legend is in no danger of slamming shut in the faces of future rock generations. --Kevin Maidment

Chronique amazon.fr:
--Philippe Margotin

hard-core or moderate fan?:
I'm a hard-core fan so i didn't spent my money on this cd, i bought the two complete concerts and the rehearsal. 3 double cds that contains all that's on this one and much more. Of course, if you're just a moderate fan, this is a great deal but for a hard-core fans who wants everything and more, buy the complete concerts direct from bright midnight records, otherwise, you would be greatly disppointed to find out that there are complete concerts available and that you just buy some excerpts of the concerts. A hard-core fans buys anything, to be one of them, you must have at least 10 bootlegs like i do.

great live concert:
In the USA, this album was released on Rhino handmade, with a completely different cover. The import(which is the same concert) has a different cover, same show. Great show too, the Doors at the aquarius, 1969. Jim was in great sprits and form and that came out in this show.

Good for casual fan, otherwise don't bother:
This single disc takes highlights from the two separate double disc Aquarius sets released by Bright Midnight Records (through the Doors' website) in the past few years. Die hard fans who want everything will go out and buy the two, complete concerts from Bright Midnight. If you don't want to spend, then this would be a good pickup. Just keep in mind you're hearing selections, not a complete show. Of course, when it comes to releasing the same material in various forms as different products, the Doors have few rivals. (The Who come to mind). They release boxsets and then selection discs from boxsets, single and double disc best ofs and greatest hits. Great music, just decide how much of it you want.

Find CD of ' Alive She Cried' instead:
contains amazing version of 'Gloria', john sebastian joins doors on harmonica, on 'little red rooster' - you are tranported..wonderful. Jim talks...that's all you really need...

Absolutely live:
Originally recorded but not used for the album that became "Absolutely Live", this is a fine complete-concert record of the Doors as a legendary live band. The recording is excellent, the performances - for the most part - first-rate, the set list admirably broad, covering most of the albums through that date. As with any Doors concert recording there are some stretches of tedium where the visual element is missed, and a few tracks that run a bit too long. A welcome addition to any Doors collection, though.
