a really good pavement impersonation.: shockingly, one hears this derivative farce described as spoon's best album on a fairly regular basis. shocking because, where kill the moonlight's angular charm n' strut is a thing of enigmatic genius, a series of sneaks is really just so much malkmus. britt's not honest yet -- and he just didn't know that imitation was a thing of lesser men....
The sweet sound of the spoonmen: I have to say, as a fan of Spoon this review will inevitably be rather biased, but I'll do my best to critique it. This albums bad points are that really it sounds like a collections of singles or at least some EP's slammed together. It lacks the flow of "Kill The Moonlight" or "Girls Can Tell". As well "Staring At The Board" sounds like it was written and recored after one to many drinks in the afternoon, a jokey almost throw away track. But the good points, well the rest of the album is the good point. The punk bluster of "Junes Foreign Spell" puts the so called punk bands like Rancid and co. at Epitaph to shame with its venom. "Metal Detektor" is laid back and bluesy. "No You're Not"'s only fault is that its over so soon, as is the problem with the woozy "Chloform". Yet the songs maintain an intimacy with listen, like they we're there with you in the same room, such a rare quality that today's over produnced bands, even the so called alt bands sorely lack. Its not their best effort, but just about all Spoon do is gold, and this is an indie classic.
Spoon!: I can't laud this album enough! I have the red vinyl and it won me over instantly. I bought the CD just for the out of print bonus tracks from "Agony of Lafitte" -- my favorite tracks are Advance Cassette, Car Radio, and oh shoot, I like them all. Britt Daniel's voice is urgent and beautiful.
A great, unique album: This is the best Spoon album in my opinion. If you really enjoy pavement, i think you'll like this one too. Highly recommended.
5 because there's not 4.5: Forget the previous reviewer. Pixies, Pavement, No Pixies or No Pavement, who cares really? I'm sick of the comparisons. I live in Austin. I see the Britt Danial all the time, no mames. He's not the coolest guy in the world, heck he's a stuck up wannabe. Who cares? This album rocks. Car Radio is a classic.
