From Amazon.com: The beloved Dr. Seuss book starring Sam-I-Am comes to life in this delightful, low-key production (though animation fans used to a lot of movement might be disappointed). Also on the bill are the Seuss-written "Ten Apples on Top" and "The Tooth Book." --Tom Keogh
toddler gives thumbs up: Since this is a video for kids, I am reviewing it for my 2 year-old, who can't type yet. I have 4 of the Beginner Book Videos and my son has been agog about them for going on 3 months. He likes to flip through the book as the videos go along, forcing me to go out and buy Dr. Suess books I didn't have. Perhaps my son loves them because he's crazy about books to begin with, and this feels like the experience of having a book read, with the plus that the semi-animation brings the book alive somewhat. I also have a son almost 4 who loves these. As for my personal interest, I wouldn't give such a glowing review, but IT'S NOT FOR ADULTS. It's for kids. So don't be dissuaded by the adult reviews below.
how can animation be STILL?: I wish I had seen the reviews on Amazon before buying this video. There is nothing moving in this video - it is essentially voiceovers over filming of a book shaking up and down. Not worth the DVD it was burned on. A HUGE WASTE OF MONEY!!!
Too short, but sweet: We received this DVD as an Xmas gift. My two and eight month old son loves the "Green Eggs and Ham" segment and demands that it be repeated over and over. Only problem I have with the disc is that the whole thing totals maybe 30 minutes and costs about the same as a full-length DVD. Check this out of the library or buy it used, because it's not worth the price. Sony could have fit more than three 10-minute episodes on this disc, no problem.
Disappointing low-grade production lacks energy: There is an older production of this story with funky music and full-on 60s animation that I was originally looking for. That one is absolutely amazing and lives up to the quality of the story itself. If you're looking for that production, this disc ain't it. This particular disc can barely be considered animation with still images being dragged across static backgrounds in true amateur style. The verbal performance of the reader is next door to pathetic and completely lacks energy. I don't know how anyone can consider this a quality commercial product, it really is a waste of money.
A big disappointment: This video was not animated like the classic Chuck Jones features such as "The Cat In The Hat" and "The Grinch". My daughter was rather disappointed to see the camera scanning over pages of the books she already owns along with paper cutouts of the characters floating around as a cheap replacement for animation. We give this video a thumbs down.
