[.ca] Flea: Adventures in Spontaneous Jamming and Technique

The man is a player, not a teacher.:
Flea is a great bass player. There's no denying that. However, most of this DVD is a discussion of his personal philosophy and Flea masking his conciet by transparently false modesty. I own this DVD and I do watch it, but I can't help but wince at most of his cliched "advice." That being said, watching him play is great, and there are some useful transcriptions in the booklet that accompanies the DVD, which will allow you to have a glimpse at what the guy is doing. Overall, this is a good DVD, but if you're a bassist looking for an instructional video, look elsewhere.

Inspiration is Instruction:
If you want to see what Flea is capable of in a stripped down format, this DVD is fantastic. As mentioned below, there is not a whole lot of instruction in the traditional sense, but more in the philosophical. Though his comments may be characterized as cliche by some, Flea is actually a musician who stands by these ideals unlike others. Buy these DVD because it showcases one of the worlds finest bass players bubbling with creativity, improvising with Chad Smith, playing some brilliant bass and telling some funny stories. Don't buy this DVD if you expect Flea to expound on technique and theory.
