From Amazon.com: Strawberry Shortcake is throwing a party for her little sister Apple Dumpling's first birthday. After making a list of the supplies they'll need, Strawberry Shortcake, Apple Dumpling, their cantankerous cat Custard, and their overly enthusiastic puppy Cupcake consult the map and head out into Strawberry land in search of things like juice, cake, and party hats. The adventuresome group meets lots of new friends like Gingersnap, Orange Blossom, and Huckleberry Pie, and learns to value friendship and diversity along the way. Certain plot points, such as a journey with a map and a cat who writes with its tail, serve as an over-sweetened, 1980s premonition of newer shows like Dora the Explorer and Sagwa while the automated cookie machine begs comparison to the 1971 Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Nonetheless, girls ages 2 to 6 will very likely gobble-up this animated show like a bowl of breakfast cereal--but hopefully not the strawberry-scented DVD box. DVD features include English and Spanish audio, English and Spanish subtitles, and a music video. --Tami Horiuchi
A Disgrace: I think I should say first that a bold warning label should be on each of these new videos: "CONTAINS POINTLESS PLOTS ALONG WITH WHINING AND SARCASTIC CHARACTERS THAT TEACH UNPLEASANT HABITS TO YOUNG CHILDREN." These pointless plots contain contradictory statements such as "better wait 'til after lunch" when a cookie was requested even though they just emerged from a "cookie factory" (having eaten the whole time they were there), as well as encouraging children to eat chocolate when they are upset, and excusing rude and sarcastic comments with "Oh, she has a good heart". This is not even the HALF of it!! I NEED MORE ROOM!
My toddler loves it!: She watches it over and over again. I don't remember the original Strawberry Shortcake so I can't comment on whether it does the old one justice or not. However, my daughter is simply crazy about it. Things that I like about it: It's long and the DVD smells like strawberries which is kinda cool. Things I don't like about it: The cat is SO annoying. I normally go for the angry, sarcastic characters but this cat is too much. I think she should consider relocating to Grouchland where she might be happier. There is also a lot of talk about eating cookies, cakes, juice, etc. So much so that, after listening to the sugary-sweet dialogue, I just want to curl up on the couch with a vegetable or two. Things my two-year-old likes about it: Everything.
My kids love it!: Folk's sometimes you just have to leave your past in the past. Seems this is a new version of the dessert kid, revived for the current generation. That's right the movie was made for our kids, it's ok to let your childhood rest peacefully. Look I'm personally still upset that Duke's no longer head hancho at GI Joe. With that said lets just give the new kid a chance. I've got three preschoolers and one in big K, all four of them really like this movie. It has a decent story and nice, well written music and songs. I could see this becoming yet one more cartoon I'm forced to watch regularly. My kids love it and that's who it's made for so I'm giving it five stars (even though I want to put my boot in the cat's furry little butt, every time she opens her mouth).
DO NOT buy this junk: I totally agree with the last reviewer. The dolls and the videos are nothing but garbage. They are a disgrace and an embarressment to the dolls and cartoons of the 80's. Whoever came up with the new straberry shortcake garbage should be ashamed of themselves. Whoever brought back the care bears thoug- did it right. They didnt try changing ANYTHING. The stuffed animals look exactly how l remember them. Its such a shame how they disgraced the fond memories I have of the classic Strawberry Shortcake. RIP Strawberry!
Berry, Berry Sweet Movie: This is a great movie to watch with your little girl. I love the moral of the story. Strawberry World is kind of like walking through Candyland. It's very nice that when Strawberry Shortcake meets a new friend they have a theme song. My only complaint would be the rude and grumpy cat Custard. Pupcake tries to play with her and she acts like a snob. This is a yummy movie and can't wait to watch the others with my daughter!
