Amazon.com Essential Video: With the help of his lawyer, Georges (Gérard Depardieu), a composer and one-time petty thief who grew up in poverty, attempts to escape his life in Paris and begin anew in America by illegally marrying Bronte (Andie MacDowell), a prim and repressed young lady from a privileged life in Connecticut. Bronte, who has agreed to the scheme for her own self-serving reasons, is exasperated when the Immigration & Naturalization Service investigates their case, and she and Georges, whom she detests, must spend time together studying each other's lives to avoid disaster. The fallout, and how it ends, is infinitely more delightful than your run-of-the-mill Hollywood romantic comedy, and the very ending itself stops deliciously short of where Hollywood would feel compelled to drag the story. Fine performances are given by MacDowell, Depardieu--who is fiercely charming pounding the keyboard of a Steinway at an upper class Manhattan dinner party--and Bebe Neuwirth, who is perfect as an upper-class child turned artist who revels in her irresponsibility. --James McGrath
Well done but no surprise: It's not a holywoodian love story. It's a simple story of 2 people meeting "randomly" - with some fun, some sadness, some laughs and some love. Good picture, good film, but not that more.
I shall be waiting for your letter, Cherie...: What a great movie...very funny and very romantic! Illegal alien Gerard Depardieu marries American gardener Andie MacDowell for his Green Card in this absolutely charming comedy. The INS is investigating their marriage to make sure it's for real. Depardieu's got that puppy-dog face that women find irresistable; Andie's goal-oriented modern woman has a sweet, vulnerable side. The scene where they take "honeymoon" photos is really cute. You'll be cheering (and crying!) at the end. Both stars give unforgettable performances and the script is delightful. A wonderful "date movie!"
Charming little film: For those unfamiliar with Gérard Depardieu, GREEN CARD is a charming introduction. Good performances from both Depardieu and Andie MacDowell, and Bebe Neuwirth is delightful in a supporting role. When things get "unfair", the reminders that the central marriage of convenience is illegal are refreshing. The DVD is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen with both English and French Dolby 5.1 audio tracks. No extras, but even so an excellent bargain.
Bravo Gerard!!: Gerard is fabulous in this one. It's a heart warming picture about two characters with very different personalities, forced together in human circumstance. Five stars!!
"when are you coming, cherie?": a fantastic surprise of a romantic comedy involving two mismatched people embarking on a marriage of convenience and a planned quickie divorce who, of course, fall in love to their surprise and seemingly too late. of course, gerard depardieu commands the movie but andie mcdowell is perfectly cast as his tightly wound counterpart. one of the all time greatest, most romantic endings that features great acting from both stars, especially depardieu. an oddly fulfilling ending, even though it leaves you longing for a sequel. what a great little sleeper of a movie this is, with an equally strong soundtrack.
