Folk songs for our times: I have many of Peter's recordings and have enjoyed those immensely, but this CD is Peter at his best. These songs are all written by Peter and all within the same time period. He challenged himself to write 10 songs for Prairie Home Companion in the month of March 2002. My favorite here is Teelin Bay Waltz. What a beautiful melody. I also like East Texas Waltz. In fact all the melodies on this cd will stick in your head. This is a refreshing new recording. One of this year's best. Each time I play it I like it even more.
A diverse new album by a newgrass fiddling whiz: Plenty of fine and fancy fiddling and picking from this veteran '70s newgrasser. Stylistically, this ranges all over the map, from relatively straightforward bluegrass to old-timey, Antebellum-flavored Celtic aires, and softer "new acoustic" style crossovers, all with solid musicianship. I prefer hearing Ostroushko stick to more old-fashioned material, which he excels at, but folks who've been introduced to his work via his appearances on "Prairie Home Companion" will probably enjoy this album in its entirety.
