Yes! Another of the great re-releases, Joy of Cooking (read Toni Browne and Terry Garthwaite) make good pre-feminist feminist music in a jazzy, folk rock sort of way. With no disrespect intended who can name the rest of the group? "Hush" "Did You Go Downtown" and "Brownsville/Mocking Bird" don't slam, but they rock along with vibrant electric piano and tight harmonies. "Too Late, But Not Forgotten" and "Red Wine at Noon" drip with the frustration of women whose men just don't have a clue and a sad solution to them. "Children's House" and "Only Time Will Tell" are anthems to hope for the future, once the men are long gone. Four other selections round out the album and are equally excellent. Bass played David Garthwaite provides a mellow rythym and Fritz Kasten's understated drums keep a tight beat for the women. Ron Wilson provides the percussion, nicely accentuating the whole effort. But when all is said and done, Terri and Tony are the soul of the group. Their harmonies and lyrics are the liquid that flows ever so nicely from cut to cut. JOC didn't last long, but their sound is truly the spirit of pioneering women. This band broke the mold of the "Girl Group" genre.

Every friend for whom I played this "classic" has loved it! Toni Brown and Terry Garthwaite at the time of this album's release besides being great singers, songwriters and musicians and writing intelligent, meaningful to adults lyrics were inspirational to women trying to improve their lot. They were the first women to team up to form a band playing lead instrumentals that received national recognition--getting airtime on WNEW-FM. Now Toni and Terry are inspiring as "older women" keeping on in their careers. Their songs are as upbeat for me and their lyrics as meaningful as they were back in 19971.
