A Life-Altering Musical Experience: Can I award more than 5 stars? There aren't enough superlatives to describe this album. Well, maybe there are, but this would be an awfully long review. The music is wonderful - the guitars, drums, harmonica, strings and instruments I've never even heard of all flow together like a stream flowing into a river. The river would be Florent Vollant's voice and the melodic sound of the Innu language. This is a magical listening experience. Turn off your cell phone, light a few candles, turn out the lights, kick off your shoes, stretch out in a comfy chair and just let this incredible music wash over you. If you happen to be looking out into the dark night with a full moon shining down, even better. These two quotes from "Florent Vollant, Dream Teller," by Annabelle Dionne give you some insight into the man and his music. "When you sing in a language people don't understand, your challenge is to reach them other than through the words of your song. The Innu language is well suited to song and melody. When I can give people the impression, through my music, that they understand my songs, it's an extraordinary sensation." "When I'm able to make people dance, sing, dream or cry, I feel I've achieved something, that I've served a purpose," he says. He discovered music early in his childhood. By the time he was five years old, he was already fascinated by it, and as he grew up it became a fundamental part of his life. "I didn't choose music, it chose me." And aren't I glad music chose him. I find I can't help but sing along even when I don't understand the words. I can't sit still when I hear "Nete Metsheteu." I could cry when listening to "Nipa Minuaten," it is just that beautiful. And don't get me started on my dreams - they star a brown-skinned man portaging his guitar and drum (and it's not Willie Dunn). Buy this album. You won't be sorry. Buy multiple copies - I have; it makes a wonderful gift.
Simply magical ... plug and play ... then relax!!!: I am writing my first review because I think Its worth it for this Album. I have just been on a trip to Montréal and its Botanical Gardens where I discovered the First Nations Garden. In it was a gift shop and some wonderful music playing in the background. I was at first captivated by the beat of the music which I really liked. While buying a book, I noticed the Katak Cd on a shelf with the Name Florrent Volant on it. I had listened to the first CD of Kashtin, many many years ago as a youth. I still have the CD in my collection and I have pulled it ou a couple times but not recently. For years now I lost touch with the music that was Kashtin and now the name I read flashed in memory and I was hooked again. I have now listened to the CD all day at work between calls and I have to say I'm quite impressed. I enjoy the large variety of different songs that Florent has on this CD. The duo with Eric Lapointe, a superstar in the french-canadian scene, is just over the top sensational. The combination of our native french tongue and Innu is just so well weaved together that I can't help but listen to it over and over. Song #2, Grains de Nacre, is just amazing. All in french and so good. Other songs, sung in Innu are the best to relax to. Like fellow reviewer Nanci Harmon said above, "Turn off your cell phone, light a few candles, turn out the lights, kick off your shoes, stretch out in a comfy chair and just let this incredible music wash over you." While I can't get that comfy at work, it soothes and relaxes my soul and makes the day go by so much faster. I'm listening to "Katak" while writing thie review. its just so so so good. A must buy to all Innu song lovers out there.
