classic: please disregard the first amazon user review of this album by mr. edward edwards. (the other CD he reviewed was cyndi lauper, and he gave it 5 stars. obviously not a sophisticated music listener.) 'leave luck to heaven' is classic. it is best described as minimal techno / microhouse. mr. dear has constructed all sorts of clever hooks and lovely melodies. i have played this album for a number of friends and they all loved it -- even the ones who previously claimed to hate techno. personally i think the highlight of the album is "it's over now" which is a dark but funky tune. i highly recommend getting a copy of this album. if you don't like it, fine. go listen to "true colors" on repeat, but don't claim that you know anything about good music. edit: take note, jonathan baxter's review is incorrect; matthew dear is not a part of sounmurderer & SK-1
a hero emerges: this guy takes electronic music seriously...which is a good thing for us. i've only seen him play once but i wish i had a cd of the set he spun because it was amazing. besides from his skills in minimal techno he is also perhaps the best thing to happen to jungle...he has a release on aphex twins' rephlex label under the name soundmurder & sk-1 that is totally mad. aside from the fan-ny blah blah this album is very solid. like all of ghostly international's stuff the album is engineered very well and sounds like a million bucks. he uses vocals effectively and the beats are snappy chunky floor stompers that contain subtle melodies and variations that will work there way into your mind days later. if you like this also run out and get Ricardo Villalobos' new album (which amazon doesn't carry either) which is very similiar but a little more sophisticated
Wonderful!: Dear's music takes a bit to get into. At first listen I didn't particularly care for it until about one third through the CD when I realized I had a smile on my face and my body was moving to the rhythyms. Wonderful stuff. Try standing when listening. It would be almost impossible to stand still. Every part of your body will be moving in a different direction. Beautifully produced CD. Clear, crisp sound. Marvelous throbbing rhythyms with light, minimal notes floating by. Get up and dance, dance, dance. Every song is outstanding. If I had any criticism of the CD, it would be with regard to the first and last tracks. Evidently they were put on as a little joke and the joke wears thin after a few listens. It's a minor criticism. This is one of the best new recordings of the year. No question.
Not all that: This CD came highly recommended and I will say that technically speaking it is good. That said, each track sounds rather cliched and tired- full of bells and whistles but still rather lifeless. Which only further proves that electronic music is in some ways the easiest to make and the most difficult to make good.
Boring.: There's really nothing to say about this album. After listening to it 5 times, I couldn't discern one song from another.
