A beautifully looking and sounding pile of dung.:
------------ The Good: ------------ - Great graphics, car damage effects, sound, music and full motion video cut scenes. - The car physics are good, but not as nice as in Driver 1 or Stuntman and not super well tuned (maybe they get better if someone sticks with 10+ hours of play but that is very unlikely). - Huge detailed environments with very long sight lines (unfortunately these are relatively empty with traffic or people - see below). - The director replay system is a huge feature, very impressive in features and I imagine significantly expensive and difficult to develop (originally in Stuntman). On the other hand, replay editing seems like a gimmick IMOHO which few will use and almost none will use more than one or twice until the novelty is worn off. ----------- The Bad: ----------- - Missions are frustratingly hard right off the bat (this was true also of the training mission in D1). Much of this is due to the unforgiving environment (see next section). - There is like 60+ minutes of cut scenes setting up each mission and carrying the story and these are visually very nicely done, but you can't bypass them even after having seen them. So, the missions are brutally hard AND you have to watch every @#$## @#$## cut scene again every time. That really is furstrating and annoying (insert explitives here)! - The environments are huge, but empty. It is cool to see very far away, but the city seems like a ghost town (same problem as with True Crime). - The game is unpolished in many areas. ----------- The Ugly: ----------- - The default controls suck. Drive a car and Square (PS2) doesn't brake as expected, but it does make you bail out while moving. WTF? I guess they have never heard of standardized driving controls. All the controls in this model are fairly non-intuitive and even in the second setup some are still confusing. - There are a whole ton of objects throughout the world that look like they should be break away, but they cause the car to get hung up in a smashing crash. Unbelievably this is true of stop lights AND these are placed on every street corner in the game making it impossible to slide around a turn and take it wide or cut it short. In the first 5 minutes of play this will make you want to punch a hole in the wall. After 2 hours you are so pissed you can't possibly continue (not that you would want to) and you are forever done with the game. - The on-foot animations, camera and controls are the worst of any game ever built, including PSOne-era games. Serviously, this game was unbelievably ambitious and they could have cut all on-foot portions and still had a very nice driving game and the game would have seemed better without the amazing sloppy execution of the on-foot stuff. Terrible animations and poor shooting control are unacceptible for any but a low budget title. --------------- Bottom Line: --------------- I loved the original Driver, but have been increasingly disappointed ever since. This game tried to do everything and in that succeeded in nothing more than a pretty good driving experience in addition to a lot of ugly features. Rent it if you are a glutton for punishment and at least you won't be mad you wasted a lot of money.

The best of the best:
People these days never recognize the best games. This game is far better than vice city for many reasons.First of all the details. The suspension on trucks and such acctually work allowing you to climb rocks with the truck.Second of all the more realistic stuff. In vice city when entering water you die in this game you swim, when shooting windshields and killing some one in the car the persons head hits the steering wheel and the horn goes off.You can use almost every vehicle tere is in vice city. The best thing about this game is that it is appropriate for any age I don't have a clue why it is rated M for mature thers no blood no gore no swearing no racism no mature content other then you can shoot people and hit them in cars.ther is so much you can do this game it is just increadible.Everything in this game is like vice city only better. So if your thinkong of getting this game don't resist just buy because, this is one of the best games to roam the playstation 2 world..........If there is going to be a driver 4 i garuntee it will be better than gta san andreas

Still not better than Vice City!:
Driv3r is pretty good.Alot better than Driver 2. The graphics are better than the GTA games. The cars look and sound good.I think that there should be many more weapons. There is no blood in the game and what SUX is that you cant drive through bushes. You will mess up your car real bad.The boats SUCK.Some look ok but the controls suck.It doesnt have realistic turns like the ones in Vice City and there are no waves i think. Oh yeah and theres no one else out ther to jack there boats. It is also kinda difficult to shoot' hard to aim while running. There are no places to buy or go into besides your house. There should be less chasing missions because they are hard' especially when you cant even ram the persons car over without it being like you hit a brick wall.I think that people should rent the game or wait till it comes out cheaper.

It's called DRIVER for a reason:
All of these people who write a review for this game that even mention Grand Theft Auto should just be dis-regarded. Driver 2 was the first game to allow you to get out of your car & steal another one... our mute friend from Liberty City was the second. Now, on with the review. Driver 3 is basically an action movie fan's dream. You don't just play Tanner, you *are* Tanner. To be able to walk out of the back of your house, hop into you speedboat, and go to another island without a loading screen keeps the illusion. Not being able to target enemies & aiming on your own builds your skill as a marksman in the game instead of just shooting wildly at your enemy. Yes, there is a lot of driving in the game, but the game isn't called Driver: The Shooting Experience. I consider this a great driving game, much like the Grand Turismo series, with missions thrown in & the benefit of being able to get out of your car. All in all, to anyone just looking for another 'Theft' clone, wait for San Andreas. Anyone looking for a enjoyable, challenging, and visually appealing game... this game's for you. 5 stars.

Good game:
Driver 3 is a really good game. It is just like grand theft auto without the blood gore and swearing. Grand theft auto is a better game so if u can choose get grand theft auto. this game is fun but there isnt much to do rather then kill people and the 10 Timmys. in story mode the missions are pretty much the same. This game is too expensive for what it is so rent it or wait until GTA San andreas comes out and buy that one. And the person who said he had a very rare movie is an idiot cause its not rare at all. and its ryan not Ron. Not much of a driver fan now are you?
