A fine introduction: This new Snapper Music Group CD provides a very good, although not exhaustive, overview of Blind Willie McTell's career. McTell was one of the finest prewar bluesmen, an expressive singer and songwriter, and a superb, sophisticated guitarist, and most of his best known songs are here - "Broke Down Engine Blues", "Writin' Paper Blues", "Razor Ball", the beautiful "Mama T'Ain't Long Fo' Day", and the classic "Statesboro Blues". A fine, nicely packaged single-disc overview (although not markedly better than other McTell-compilations, like Wolf's or Indigo's).
