Maha Mantra or Maha Exploitation: There are some sweet moments of prayer on this CD, but hiding in the garden of supposed spirituality lies, once again, the specter of manipulation and exploitation. Reading the liner notes of the CD package we find that these chants were recorded in a temple in the Himalayas and a "portion" of the profits go to a temple in New Mexico. There's no mention of, nor credit given to the actual singers on this CD. And when I searched the publishing company, I found that the songs are credited to Krishna Das, the co-owner of the record company, as composer and publisher of these ancient chants. What about the artists? What about the artist's families? These are obviously very poor mountain people. Or what about the temple where these chants were recorded? Surely they could use an infusion of American dollars. It saddens and angers me to see yet one more rip-off in the name of "spirituality". My recommendation for this CD? Find someone who already owns it and bootleg it! Why put more money into the pockets of the thieves who released it......
Beautiful Chanting: These chants sound beautiful to me. I don't think Krishna Das would exploit these musicians, but he can speak for himself if he chooses. The Hanuman Foundation is a worthwhile charitable organization. Don't be so quick to judge. As I said the chants are beautiful- that's what counts.
