[.ca] THX 1138 (The George Lucas Director's Cut)

From Amazon.com:
George Lucas's enigmatic feature film debut expands on a student film he made at USC. Created under the wing of producer Francis Ford Coppola, this movie is a bleak vision of a world in which technology, not man, is the ultimate dictator. Efficiency overrides every other aspect of human life, as people are reduced to code names and their lives are contained, monitored, and manipulated for the sake of the system. Featuring unsettling performances by Robert Duvall, Donald Pleasance, and Maggie McOmie, THX 1138 does not attempt to explain how things became this way; rather, it utilizes the alienation of its characters, the stifling white-on-white imagery of its sterilized society, and the claustrophobic, droning sound design to emphasize the dangers of a world reliant on soulless technology. Even though this is not a film one will want to take in repeatedly, THX 1138 merits attention because it is that rare film that uses images and sounds--rather than relying heavily on dialogue--to communicate its dark prophecy. --Bryan Reesman

Real freedom comes from within:
George Lucas shows us a world where everyone is controlled through work, drugs, and the media (sound familiar?). The hero (Robert Duvall) finds out that real freedom comes from within. \oDW\c

A little known fact...:
Remember the scenes of the robotic-like cop beating the human? Well, those sounds are used to start off the first track of the Nine Inch Nails album "Downward Spiral." Pretty cool, huh?

A Possible Leftist World?:
I loved THX 1138. I first watched it when around 9 and of course couldn't comprehend it then, but the ending chase was awesome! I can't wait for the DVD issue to appear as many of my "elite liberal" friends have not heard of this film. I have a different take on the possible reason this society evolved, I picture Progressives at the source. The tell tale scene is the trial of THX 1138; if those aren't liberal elites (especially the outspoken woman), I don't know what are! This film is depicted by many as the robots controlling the humans; but it's the ELITES who are in control. Donald Pleasance' character is GAY and in power, the church is a state institution (i.e. Soviets, Nazi's (National SOCIALIST Party)), you cannot talk against the state, you must TAKE drugs; I mean if you all are still thinking this is about the RIGHT WING you must be pretty naive. THIS IS ABOUT WHAT A LIBERAL ELITE SOCIETY WOULD BE LIKE! One more example, where are the guns? How about another, abortion is legal, how about the state taking youths under its TOTAL care and eliminating the family model, LOL. You can find a LOT of what the LEFT WANTS SOCIETY TO BE LIKE IN THIS FILM! Really prophetic movie that all you leftist think is due to the "Dark Right Wing Side" when really its the other way around, WAKE UP AND THINK!

Anti-septic:
In a repressive sterilized world, one man fights for freedom.

AMBITIOUS MOVIE THAT DOESN'T GET THE DESIRED RESULTS.:
"THX-1138" is an spiritual, introspective and minimalist movie, directed in 1971 by George Lucas, in a period before his spectacular "Star Wars" original trilogy. This movie has good things, for example, it has an intelligent central issue: the extermination of the human spirit. However, the execution wasn't the best, and this is an evidence that when George Lucas is more ambitious, worst are the results that he gets. Just take a look to the pretentious movies "Star Wars, episode I & II", even though those are entertaining movies, pale when compared to the original trilogy. George Lucas is not the best director when comes the time to create stories that are supported by the performances of the cast, he is not good directing dramatic scenes, he is a magician creating fantastic movies with spectacular details and scenes, in result, "THX-1138" is a minor movie, the intentions are good, but the execution isn't, the central issue can make you thought about it, but the movie by itself is mediocre.
