More crooked rain is a good thing: I'm always hesitant of re-release albums. They always seem like a bit of a cash grab, especially when they're loaded with b-sides and multiple versions of the same song. But this album is very different. The b-sides are actually well recorded and even though many songs are on here more than once you can appreciate why each version means something different to Stephen and the band.
Another richly deserved reissue: Well worth getting even if you already have the original album. I was actually a little surprised that although CRCR is a more accessible album than Slanted, there are actually more incredibly weird songs here than on the Slanted reissue. Admittedly, the good extras are not as numerous on this reissue, but there are some exciting little nuggets, like an 8-song glimpse into what Crooked Rain may have turned out like if Gary Young had not departed, early recordings of 3 songs that ended up on Wowee Zowee, and a pee-your-pants funny (okay, maybe not that funny) tribute to REM called "Unseen Power of the Picket Fence". Also, a piano-less non-album version of "Range Life", while interesting, makes abundantly clear the effect a good engineer can have on an unpolished gem.
