well scripted: I thought this movie was very good, not only for the music score, that by the way i thought was excellent, but for the humanity of it,it really touched me.
some movies just don't get the credit they deserve: I rember watching this movie when I was 13 years old,I loved it it was one of my all time favorites.About five years ago I wanted to buy it or rent it,it was practicly imposible to get a hold of I could not find it anywhere, then one day I came across a small video store that had it and I offerd to buy it from the owner,it was the orignal 1985 tape in perfect condition and to this day you still cant find it anywhere.Itis a shame this movie is so hard to find ,the story, acting and drama is some of the best to be seen.If you can find this movie, get it you don't know what your missing!
Very Good But Takes Itself Too Seriously: This is a film about a group of researchers who find a caveman frozen in the ice, thaw him, and deal with introducing him to the present. It strives for realism, and often finds it. Timothy Hutton, as one of the main scientists, does an admirable job in this role. He tries to remain the detached observer as a scientist is supposed to be, but also has to help his subject cope with a new reality, which takes compassion. Some of the music ("Heart of Gold") is perfect. Where the film stumbles is in taking itself too seriously. As many science fiction films have ended up being farces, whether they were intended to be or not, other films, like "Iceman" try so hard to avoid farcedom that they become grim. "Iceman" becomes grim and, to me, the whole tone of the film, right from the beginning, is so serious that the viewer knows there is little chance for a happy ending. Even films like "Saving Private Ryan" have some light moments, which gives them credibility and realism. When a film, like "Iceman" (and "Journey to the Far Side of the Sun") become 100% serious to make sure they are not mistaken for farces, they lose their realism; life is never 100% anything.
Not My Ice Pick: When the Iceman is finally allowed to revive inside the lavish tropical ecosystem the nitwit scientists have created, Lone begins his moving performance as Charlie the Neanderthal. And right from the start, the film's flaws commence: we're simultaneously given to believe that this resourceful hunter, who lived and lives cannily and alertly by his wits, (a) adjusts immediately to a tropical enviroment unlike any he would have known, and (b) NEVER LOOKS UP! A glance to the sky would have freaked him out a lot sooner than the plastic hose in the marsh did! All those girders, all that glass! How much disbelief can a viewer suspend? And this is just the beginning of the problems. There's an axiom among writers that you can't create a character more intelligent than you are yourself: if the same holds true for movie makers, we have to believe that the IQs of those who collaborated on this film were in the double digit range. The potential for the premise of this film is huge, and Lone single-handedly makes us believe in the moral quandries of his idiot captors, and the shared humanity of of all people, however remote their connections through culture and time. The glimpses Lone gives us into these themes makes the viewer realize what a great film this might have been---but isn't.
I Cried and I can't get off the power !!!: i just watched this film on TV and I cried !! I know there are so many places inreasonable , but , ok , then, there are more flaws in "The Lord of the Ring" or "Star War" . It is the spirit if this film that touches me .And John Lone is such a good actor , i almost believe that he is a real cave man !! About there are people said that the Iceman shouldn't get use to the tropical enivorment because he was discovered in the ice , I think in other aspect . At first , we don't know where did "Chirlie" lived back in 10,000 years ago , the film already told us that he had left his homeland for searching the GOD to bring back the foods. He could traveled far to get the ice land. Or maybe in the prime time the weather was like we can see now in New Zealand , changes were great in different seasons. I love this film after all , it is a pre-80's film , don't forget !! It is quiet well in that time .
