From Amazon.com: It's not the scary hit that The Ring was in 2002, but The Grudge makes a similarly convincing case for American remakes of popular Japanese horror films. Barely a year passed between the release of Takashi Shimizu's creepy ghost story Ju-On: The Grudge and the production of this American remake, set in Tokyo and starring Sarah Michelle Gellar in her first post-Buffy horror film. About the only significant difference between the two films is the importing of a mostly-American cast (including Bill Pullman, Clea DuVall and Grace Zabriskie), but The Grudge was reconfigured (by screenwriter Stephen Susco) to allow Shimizu to refine and improve the spookiest highlights of his earlier version, which enjoyed previous incarnations as a short film and two made-for-Japanese-video features. Surprising box-office analysts with a $40 million opening weekend, The Grudge may disappoint hard-core horror fans because it lacks gore and graphic violence, but as a creepy tale about a very haunted house, it's guaranteed to send a few chills up your spine. --Jeff Shannon
Japanese stories: I loved this movie. I will definitely watch it again! This is a Japanese movie, with a Japanese director made with American Actors. The story is nonlinear which is a great departure from the types of movies north americans watch. The nonlinear style is delightfully disorienting and breathlessly confusing. It is often easy to forget that storytelling in different cultures may vary. Japanese stories tend to unfold in a different manner than american/european. A home is cursed caused by a tragedy from years ago. The height of emotion during the tragedy infects the home like a disease. The emotion flails unrelentlessly, it's powerful and touches every person who is subsequently in this home. The anger is a confused one twisting one way and then another. It doesn't think, plan, analyse it just does, it just exists. This movie, is icy, chilling and disorienting in the most fabulous way. I commend Sarah Michel Geller and Ted Raimi for choosing such an intriguing movie and daring to do something "different" from the normal hollywood claptrap. I notice that others don't review this movie highly. This film is for the film buff in search of something different and new. If you prefer the usual hollywood treatment I wouldn't recommend itto you
FRIG off Roy Frigg off: K this is a story bout a women named Pam jones who has a husband she controls all the time. whenever she sees him (roy)talking to another women (JUST TALKING) she gets all flippy and snippy bout it. Roy (the husband)is always talking behind her back bout how controlling she is and how her ways are but yet he wont have the courage to speak up about it to her face. For example they (pam and roy) could be at a restaurant ordering their food and if Roy does not say thank you or please to the the waiter or waitress whatever... Pam will say "Roy... did you say thank you". Rate in front of the waiter or (waitress)you know how embarrising that would be having youre own WIFE telling YOU to say thank you rate infront of the person. well anyways these people are an old couple so they bicker a lot they are from Ontario Canada which is where im from to. there is one time where they were moving because they were evicted as usuall, and it was snowing so when you are moving from a townhouse to an apartment its bulls*** so it was a crapy day well Roy Pam are bickering as usuall well Roy was unloading boxes from the pickup truck to the apartment (elevator)well Roy flips out and starts cursing and swearing, well Pam says "Eh Roy calm down and relax and Roy says no you relax so Pam says Frig off roy, and roy says NO YOU FRIG OFF so they got into their argument It was hilaris though. well thats why i named this title FRIG OFF ROY FRIG OFF. And this bulls*** still goes on and on cuz roy wont make a stand lol.so if u r from the U.S.A and u come to visit Canada Ontario (hamilton)and u see an argument going on with two old people... pull over and say hello you never know it could be Pam and Roy...lol. by the way this was written by a 14 year old reviewer
a pointless, dull excursion (1.3/5): my friend and i watched the grudge on DVD,and neither one of us was impressed.it was basically a one note movie.i won't go into any further details here.but, basically, whole premise is hard to believe, because once the ghost shows itself,it is not remotely scary, forget about terrifying.the acting was not convincing in the least.i did however like the dark atmosphere of the film, which gave it a sense of foreboding...for all of five minutes, after which the novelty wears off.there are two things which are absolutely terrifying about the whole thing.the first is that i will never get back the minutes of my life spent watching this movie.the second is that someone thought it merited a sequel.(Though i will watch the sequel,on the off chance it is a better movie)as for the grudge itself---beige i.e bland and dull.pointless 1.3*/5 for the 5 minutes of atmosphere.
Jerry Is Not A Typical Canadian..: Please be advised that the "Jerry Sweat" reviewer is NOT a typical Canadian. While many Canadians are stupid, moronic, and sometimes borderline cretinous (like Jerry), not all are this simple. Jerry is obviously a reject from the Ontario school system. And it's not truly his fault. They have failed him. They have failed many before. And now we must suffer the fact that Jerry and many of his ilk must wander the countryside...alone and without intelligent thought. Let us help Jerry before he reproduces. For God's sake...we can't let that happen. Send money. Together we can hopefully buy Jerry the brain that he so desperately needs. Kinda like the Scarecrow.
A sufficient cure for insomnia?: The idea of a horror movie being so dull that it put me to sleep, and a restful sleep at that, really surprised me, as I like a lot of different film genres including horror and the variety of horror styles. I will try not to repeat what others have said, but essentially I expected better. If you like The Ring you will love The Grudge? What a lie. I did like The Ring, but I don't care much at all for The Grudge. If I was to give The Ring 4 or 5 stars, I could honestly give The Grudge not much more than 1 star. A complete viewing of The Grudge later, did convey to me the basic concept and the essentials of the plot which were intriguing enough. I was left thinking what a great concept was in this movie, yet it was portrayed so lifelessly. The scares... Weren't. Gellar's acting has been better. Pullman's wasn't so bad, but seemed merely workman-like. I think it did so well in the first week or so of initial release to theatres simply because the commercials and trailers were better than the movie they promoted. I do believe that I would likely appreciate much better the original(s) that The Grudge was based on.
