A Collection That Lives Up To Its Title:
Hall & Oates' 1983 greatest hits album, Rock N' Soul, was such a good compilation that it would be years, decades even, before a better replacement would come along. Finally in the 2000's, comes the album that replaces that, and then some. The Essential (originally released as Ultimate Hall & Oates) is easily the best and most thorough Hall & Oates collection released. The compilers seemed to have taken extra care in not only choosing the right songs, but making sure they were the best versions, so that we have the full length versions of great songs like She's Gone and I Can't Go for That, while the single versions of Out Of Touch, Adult Education, and Possession Obsession (which were better than their album versions)were included as well. With practically every hit included from 1973-2002, plus important album tracks, there's not much that could've been included to improve this collection; maybe their 1985 live Motown medley or Hall's solo hit Dreamtime could have been the icing on the cake, but with classics like Private Eyes, Maneater, Kiss On My List & Family Man, and newer songs like Do It For Love, this album really is one-stop-shopping for these guys. Highly recommended, and now I can finally retire my copy of Rock N' Soul (which strangely enough has now been reissued with bonus tracks; too late!).
