From Amazon.com: Mixing action, humor, sentiment, and even a few righteous moral convictions, The Wild Geese is good, rousing fun. Released theatrically in 1978 (oddly, this 2005 DVD release is referred to as the "30th Anniversary Edition"), director Andrew V. McLaglen's film depicts the adventures of a group of British mercenaries hired by a shady multinational corporation to free the benevolent leader of an African nation held captive by a ruthless dictator. Led by the caustic, no-nonsense Col. Allen Faulkner (Richard Burton), these soldiers of fortune are all stout fellows out to earn a big payday and restore a good man to his rightful place of power (the underlying message of universal racial brotherhood is effective, if somewhat simplistic), and they do their job swiftly and efficiently... at least until they're double-crossed by their venal, perfidious employers, at which point the film becomes a tale of survival and revenge. The cast, which also includes Richard Harris, Roger Moore, and a host of other fine veteran actors, is first-rate, the story-telling efficient, the dialogue entertaining (with occasional bursts of profanity), and the action reasonably exciting and not overly graphic. And even if the pace is somewhat leisurely by new millennium standards (we're nearly an hour into it before the actual mission starts), The Wild Geese is a very enjoyable ride. Bonus features include a profile of producer Euan Lloyd and commentary by Lloyd, Moore, and journalist Jonathan Sothcott. --Sam Graham
Wild Geese Rocks: This film defies the misguided image of mercenaries as simply 'Killers for Profit' and portrays them as what they really are: Private warriors who would often fight for a cause other than financial gains. The fact that the film was shot on location in Africa added realism to the story where many actual merc operations took place under somewhat similar circumstances during the Cold War era. Great movie casts, accurate weaponry and superb story line make this film a truly classic and collectable for post war history & military enthusiasts alike.
A Buried Treasure Is Unearthed: Congratualtions to Tango Entertainment for their superb job on the "30th" Anniversary edition of this exciting film released in 1978. Sporting an excellent 1.85 wide-screen transfer, this forgotten war epic starring three British stalwarts, can now be enjoyed as a rip-roaring adventure without the poltical controversy that greeted it some 27 years ago. Extras include a nostalgic behind the scenes feaurette, a brand-new informative documentary on producer Euan Lloyd, a good-humoured commentary featuring star Sir Roger Moore, and the usual trailers, radio spots, biographies and stills gallery. A star-studded package for an action movie with characters you can care about.
The Wild Geese 30th anniversary edition: I was dissapointed by the lack of a enhanced widescreen version and lack of a5.1 surround sound track ,the extra features are a welcome addition of a movie that I fondly remember
Like a good meal: I have being trying to get a hold of this one for a very long time, originally on VHS, now DVD. I plan on finding a nice quiet place this weekend, without any chance of being interrupted, and savour it. I hope they have done a good job on this DVD, and that it has been worth the wait. P.S In case you haven't guessed the movie is great.
The Wild Geese 30th Anniversary Edition DVD: I have been waiting for this movie to be released on dvd since I first got my first dvd player.I saw it in the theater in 1978 and have a copy of the movie on laser disc. After watching the movie on dvd I must say that I am sorry to see that the widescreen edition is not enhanced for 16by9 tv's, watching it on my front screen projector with a 106 inch screen the movie was not as impressive as it could have been if Tango Entertainment had went the extra distance and released it properly in th enhanced mode and remastered the sound in Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. The extra's were nice to see and it was good to hear Roger Moore talk about the movie.I still give the disc 4 star's because I the movie is still great and has a great cast and show's they could make a movie without computer enhanced battle stunt's.
