wilderness - pitchforkmedia: On their debut for the celebrated Jagjaguwar label, this Baltimore four-piece signifies a shift back towards the more cerebral end of the rock spectrum. Deploying spacial, dream-like atmospheres and ominous ethereality over ride cymbals, tom-heavy drum patterns, and brooding, artstruck guitars that echo the swirling neo-psych of early-80s heroes Echo and the Bunnymen, the Teardrop Explodes, or vintage 4AD artists, Wilderness' brand of substantive art-rock proves ripe for exploration, and marks a welcome change of pace in the midst of a wave of exuberant joy-pop.
cataclysmic cascading decadence: It's very easy to get caught on the riffs and drum beats here on this album, which brings the instant attraction. And then there's the singing that doesn't catch you right away, but holds you in there. Without the chanting, this CD wouldn't be in my rotation nearly as much as it is. It's not enough then to figure out what words are being said, but why. There are messages here, and half the fun is repeating these as loud as possible any chance you get. Really looking forward to the concert here in TO in April, and their second full length album as well. They are the Wilderness and o yes they are here to stay.
