Time to play? No, I think I'll pass.: Just yesterday, I had the unfortunate opportunity to watch "Dolly Dearest." Released back in 1992, this movie is tepid and mediocre. Although the story's occult background is morbidly attractive, the film itself rips off "The Exorcist" and "Child's Play" combined. Once I give you the boring synopsis, you will understand why "Dolly Dearest" was never put on DVD. This tacky tale is situated in a hot Mexican village. The Reeds, a nice middle-class family from Los Angeles, has moved into a beautiful house as the father, an ambitious businessman named Eliot (Sam Bottoms), plans to restart an interesting business. Smelling the scent of money in the air, Eliot wanted to expand the "Dolly Dearest" toy factory, a manufacturing plant that turns out to be a run-down shack. Inside this neglected structure, Eliot discovers an eerie brunette doll in a bright red dress. Amazed by the doll's beauty, he gives it to his overjoyed daughter Jessica (Candy Hutson) as her new playmate. Immediately afterward, of course, Jesse forms an unhealthy attachment to Dolly. She dotes over her, talks to her constantly, and even cuts her own hair to look like her. Jesse's mother, Marilyn (Denise Crosby), senss that something is wrong (Duh!) and is at first appalled by her outbursts and increasingly rude attitude. Then, when a local priest blesses the house by sprinkling holy water on the front porch, Jesse screams in a violent temper tantrum. From there, it becomes obvious that Dolly is possessed by an ancient evil, and that she's bewitching this girl to perform her wicked deeds. The first individual to sense this unholy presence was Carmila (Lupe Ontiveros), a terrifed housekeeper who clutches a rosary in her palms. Naturally, the poor woman becomes the first victim of Dolly's wrath. In the shadows, the evil traps Carmila in a basement, stabs her with a pair of scissors, and electrocutes her in a tub of water. This scene includes a couple of creepy moments; glass eyeballs roll across the floor while plastic limbs and rubber heads are strewn everywhere. Next, Dolly kills a Spanish local named Luis (Will Gotay). After goofing around with the doll, he has a few cardboard boxes dropped on his head and his fingers shoved into a sewing machine (Ouch!). So why is Dolly so evil, you ask? The Reeds' house happens to be located near a Mayan burial site that was excavated not too long ago. As stated much later by Dr. Karl Reznick (Rip Torn), a famed archaeologist, the crypt isn't Mayan at all; it was constructed 900 years ago by the bizarre Sanzia tribe. When translated in English, "Sanzia" means "Satan." (Gee, why am I not surprised?) And that's not all, kiddies. Even more disturbing information is found by Reznick and Jimmy Reed (Chris Demetral), an excited 7th grader who will do anything to be his partner. It's eventually revealed that the Sanzia conceived the Devil's Child, which bore the body of an infant and the horned head of a goat. Even worse, these people nourished her with the blood of slaughtered children. One impressive camera shot shows the withered, crooked skeleton of the ugly beast. I you seek a true fright film, you better skip this one. Not only is the story awfully predictable, but the rasping, knife-wielding Dolly isn't remotely scary.
So bad, It's good! Anyone who's a Chucky fan will like it!!: Although in some ways it ripps off Child's Play, it turned out to be a pretty entertaining movie. The special effects are a mixture of good and bad. The first killing scene was great but others are just plain laughable, sometimes even scary! It's some what creative. It sets out to do everything it's meant to and so I give it a four out of five star rating. Like i said, It's so bad, It's GOOOOD!
Scary Movie: I truly love this cult classic I don't understand why this has not made it to DVD yet. Dolly dearest is somewhat scary I remember this movie since I was a kid. Please someone put this on DVD.
Its time to play.....: A demonic black maginc curse centuries old, turns the world's most beautiful doll into thw world's most sacage killer. Now, this "dolly" has her deranged eyes aimed at a little girl named Jessica, and will do anything to possess her. Bizarre events explode into a ferocious frenzy of madness. A housekeeper is torn apart. A nightwatchman is hacked to pieces. As the body count rises and the carnage continues, Jessica loses her sould to her new "playmate". To save his daughter, Jessica's father must enter a nightmarish world where dark powers of evil have reigned supreme...until now! This movie is pretty good if you are into the psychotic killer doll thing, so if you like chucky or magic this movie is for you!
Hmmm: I really don't know what to say, the movie was defintely wonderful and yet easy to scorn at the same time. The plot and scripting are ridiculous, unbelieveable fluff. The acting is the standard horror movie type -- the acting people who got a role in a low-cost flick and were never seen again. However, the movie is fairly good. It has some low-grade action & suspense but Child's Play is easily much better. This movie, to its credit, was the victim of production in early 1990's, when SFX were less advanced. If the movie were remade today, it'd probably be much more than a three-stars average flick. It does shine in some parts - the Jessica / dollhouse scene is great, the Housemaid's killing is sad but brutally gory, and the rest of the film is a bit weak and struggles along to support a weak plot. Maybe you should rent it, but don't buy it!
