[.ca] Godannar - Engage and Destroy (Volume 1)

From Amazon.com:
The sci-fi broadcast series Godannar (2003) is set in the not-too-distant future, five years after the alien Mimetic Beasts attacked Earth. Although they were supposedly defeated, at least one appears in every episode. Seventeen-year-old Anna wants to be a mecha pilot, so she can join her new husband Goh in fighting the Beasts. She gets her chance when the Neo-Okusaer robot rises out of a graveyard: with Anna at the helm, it successfully fuses with Goh's mecha to form Godannar, an über-robot that can beat the sashimi out of any Mimetic Beast. In between monster attacks, misunderstandings arise between the pneumatic females in the cast and the largely ineffectual males. Director Yasuchika Nagaoka moves everything at a frantic pace, trying to disguise the characters' utter lack of personalities. Godannar plays like an unsuccessful attempt to blend Evangelion, Bubbblegum Crisis, and Daphne in the Brilliant Blue: even the mecha jiggle in some shots. It's strictly for fans of big-eyes-big-breasts-big-guns anime. (Rated TV MA, suitable for ages 16 and older: Nudity, violence, tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

BOO YAH BABY!!:
Once again, Mr. Solomon has judged a series before he found out what it was really all about. Firstly, I must admit that Godannar is fanservice on crack. Every DVD showcases another overly-well-endowed young woman in a tight fitting costume. You can't escape it, so don't even bother trying. If this kind of thing offends you, turn back now, but if you are willing to overlook this outrageous aspect, then Godannar can actually give you a really entertaining and laugh-out-loud thrill ride in return. And it's actually got a pretty damn good story lurking behind all those jiggle-shots ;) The first few episodes can be a bit hard to follow, but pretty quickly the show settles in and gets down to business. I won't talk about the storyline because I don't want to inadvertently give anything away, but I can say after having finished it, it just gets better and better as the series progresses. Everything builds and builds; one second it's goofy slapstick comedy and the next you have the breath knocked out of you as tragedy strikes, until everything comes to a head as the story arc reaches it's conclusion. And what a conclusion it was. This series has the most satisfying ending of any anime that I have ever watched. Is Godannar perfect? No. Does that matter? Not in the slightest. I was leery when I first ordered this series. I thought that it might just have been nothing but fanservice, and it certainly has a ton of it, but now that I have watched it, I am very glad that I did.
