[.ca] King Kong (2005) (Collector's Edition)

What was this?:
Summary: odd over hyped over budgeted over the top remake of a classic by LotR director Peter Jackson. The Good: some really cool effects. They did a great job of making Kong more Ape like. The period aspect of this movie was really well done, especially the intro to the depression at the begining. The Bad: Kong Vs The Terrible T-Rexes, Kong Vs The Vampire Bats, Kong in the Land of the Lost, Giant Bugs are Creepy but Weak, these all could have been titles of parts of the movie. These parts were almost long enough to be thier own movies anyway. Seriously what the hell? The Ugly: okay getting over the bizare mega action battle scenes, this movie was way too long. Every single seen seemed to drag on about 10 minutes too long. You know that scene where they 'turn' on Kong, and it goes all slow motion, I think I could have gotten the impact of that scene in about 5 seconds, I didn't need the 5 minutes of slow mo, watching every crew memeber with blood in thier eyes. That's just one example. Then to really mess with you, the last quarter of the movie moves at breakneck speeds. Suddenly back in New York, suddenly weeks or months later, suddenly there are new plays and the Kong Show, suddenly he's tame, and then not 15 minutes later, he's free. Very odd change of pace, that just didn't get me up from the back of my seat. Overally: okay, really it wasn't that bad. I was just wierd. I just didn't get it. It was definately too long, I wasn't kidding about the drawn out scenes, but the rest of it makes for a pretty interesting Saturday Afternoon (into evening) creature feature.

A timeless classic:
I grew up loving the early ape films King Kong (1933) and Mighty Joe Young (1949). King Kong is a classic retelling of the Beauty and the Beast story and the original was groundbreaking in its use of special effects. Remaking a classic will always attract harsh critics. For me, a lover both of classic films and of modern science fiction, I place King Kong (2005) among the best films I have seen in years. In the cinema, this was a true spectacle to behold. The action and CGI special effects were astounding. Peter Jackson took a fairly sparse story and fleshed it out. I appreciated the longer back-story to the characters in New York prior to the sea voyage to Skull Island. The exposure of themes relating to racism, animal and ecological abuse, and treatment of women was obvious, but not preachy. Despite this being an action film, these themes seemed to me as large as Kong was himself. Jackson tweaked the storyline a bit and improved on the original. The introduction of the writer (Brody) as love interest instead of the ship captain made more sense and was simply a better story. With the original film, I was quite moved as a kid when Kong died. With this version, I was at least as moved or more as an adult. The relationship with Kong and Ann was portrayed better. I believed that they had made a bond with each other. The moment of Kong's demise is one of the most touching moments I have seen in a film in years. Finally, James Newton Howard's soundtrack is quite moving, with beautiful, stirring melodies befitting this grand film. Worth listening to in its own right. I would have liked to watch the film with an isolated music score. Unfortunately, this was not included as an option on any edition so far. Editions: Two-Disc Special Edition (2006) For the collector, this included the Production Diaries and several bonus features. A must-have if you love this film and want more background information. 3-Disc Deluxe Extended Edition (2006) There is no overlap to what is on the 2-disc version, so this was a worthwhile second purchase for me. I enjoyed seeing the deleted scenes. The slightly longer (13 min.) version was intereresting to see. I especially wanted the audio commentary track. No regrets here for having bought both the 2-disc and 3-disc versions, because they each offered different material.

king kong the big mess wonder of the world:
first of all I salute you mr. jaskson on lord of the ring!but on king kong you mess up big time, cgi was great. the the action scene was terrible!!!!!!! people running with the brontosoues in the pathway and in between was one of the worst part of the film , it was so unreal, don't remember even seen one person get squash their, maybe one person, and when the girl jump on the rex nose while been chase that is another laugher, what really got me laughing is when king kong was fighting the rexs on vines king kong swing like tarzan , and the rex was swing like tarzan, and to top it off to see the girl jumpimg on the rexs noses, what was worst is their was two rex swinging like tarzan and the vines didn't snap, and this ain't counting king king swinging yet, how could the vines hold up 50 tons, that did it for me, i finishing watching the film but i was expecting this great film, but was very disappointed, could have been great great great film, the 1933 king kong was a great great great film, and to that young kid reviewer who said old people are giving bad reveiws on new king king, im young person im giving a poor review on new king kong because it was poorly done!i would say a old person has more experience in judgeing a good film or a bad film than a young person ! most young people don't know a good film from a bad film because they didn't watch that many film in the their life to make a fair judgement, this is to that young person that use the word old farts! grow up and watch and learn!

a good movie that had the potential for greatness:
i was very disappointed in this version of King Kong.i thought it would be better than it was it.i felt it takes to long to get to the action, focusing much too long on the romance between two of the main characters.there were some exciting moments to be sure, but there was also a lot of repetition.sometimes the action went much longer than it should have.this film had some humour injected into it,which the original did not have.however, the humor is misplaced in this film, and just doesn't work.it almost seems like a time filler and very contrived, and slows the movie down.there are also some whimsical moments in the film, which take away from Kong's dignity and majesty, making him not quiet wimpy, but less of a force to be reckoned with.on the plus side, the ape is very realistic looking, including the hair and eyes, which are very hard to make natural using CGI.however, the ape's movements are sometimes herky jerky, showing CGI still has a few bugs to work out.that's not to say this is a bad film.it's not.it's just not as good as it could have been.It is too long, and i feel it could have benefited from some editing.and it could have been paced better.of course, this is all just my opinion of the film.for me King Kong (2005 version)is a 3/5.
