SUSANNA (Pat Buttram), HERE'S TO THE LADIES (Gene Autry and Extras), ON TOP OF OLD SMOKY (Gene Autry, Cass County Boys, and Extras) "MULE TRAIN" (Released: 22 February 1950) (71 mins/B & W) --- Under Jon English (Director), our story line and plot, Gene comes to the aid of old pal Smokey (Pat Buttram) when his partner discovers natural cement and suggests it should be used for a new dam --- But this is the last thing Sam Brady (Robert Livingston) the badmen of Trail End wants, as they have a monopoly of the wagons needed to haul rocks to the site --- the local law is a lady Sheriff Carol Bannister (Sheila Ryan, who in real life is Pat Buttram's wife), can this law officer be trusted --- is the towns banker Clayton Hodges (Frank Jaquet) mixed up with all the other culprits secretly attempting to obtain the land --- it's a job for a singing marshal our hero Gene Autry --- Frankie Laine and Vaughn Monroe recorded "Mule Train" along with Burl Ives, Bing Crosby, including Gene Autry, but Frankie Laine's sales zoomed past the 1,000,000 mark ----- some wonderful tunes, MULE TRAIN (Gene Autry), ROOM FULL OF ROSES (Gene Autry), OLD CHISHOLM TRAIL (Gene Autry), MULE TRAIN (Gene Autry) "BEYOND THE PURPLE HILLS" (Released: 25 July 1950) (70 mins/B & W) --- Under Jon English (Director), our story line and plot, Gene breaks from the realistic formula by introducing Little Champ and having him along with Champion, perform some tricks as both horses have important roles in the story line, including some funny bits with Pat Buttram ----- Gene Autry becomes sheriff of Nortonville after the previous peace keeper is gunned down in a bank robbery --- Gene even though he believes Jack Beaumont (Hugh O'Brian) is innocent of his father's murder must arrest him --- Gene has a few ideas that will bring the real criminals to justice --- Pat Buttram and Gene Autry were very, very dear friends and had a lot of mutual respect for each other --- Gene usually did one take and was very much a professional, and the crew embraced his work ethic - - - - - some wonderful tunes, BEYOND THE PURPLE HILLS (Gene Autry), DEAR HEARTS AND GENTLE PEOPLE (Gene Autry) "INDIAN TERRITORY" (Released: 30 September 1950) (70 mins/B & W) --- Under Jon English (Director), the story line is excellent with outstanding productions --- meets the challenge which these "singing cowboy" movies face is how the music fits in --- in this case, I would say --- comic relief, which Pat Buttram provides here is simply great --- James Griffith meets the criteria of an "old west" character during the '50s television era --- the plot has Gene helping investigate Indian raids on a supply route --- these renegade Indians are led by a man who's half-white, working for a caucasian Austrian --- meanwhile a cattleman and his daughter encounter difficulties settling in the area --- when it comes to top-notch Autry films this is the place to sit the saddle and ride - - - - some wonderful tunes, CHATTANOOGIE SHOE SHINE BOY (Gene Autry), WHEN THE CAMPFIRE IS LOW ON THE PRAIRIE (Gene Autry), SQUARE DANCE CALLS (Pat Buttram) BIOS: 1. Gene Autry Date of Birth: 29 September 1907 - Near Tioga, Texas Date of Death: 2 October 1998 - Studio City, Los Angeles, California Special footnote, Orvon Gene Autry was an American performer who gained fame as The Singing Cowboy on the radio, in movies and on television --- Discovered by film producer Nat Levine in 1934, he and Burnette made their film debut for Mascot Pictures Corp. "In Old Santa Fe" as part of a singing cowboy quartet; he was then given the starring role by Levine in 1935 in the 12-part serial "The Phantom Empire" --- Shortly thereafter, Mascot was absorbed by the formation of Republic Pictures Corp. and Autry went along to make a further 44 films up to 1940, all B westerns in which he played under his own name, rode his horse Champion, had Burnette as his regular sidekick and had many opportunities to sing in each film --- Autry became the top Western star at the box-office by 1937, reaching his national peak of popularity from 1940 to 1942.
