Modern classic.: Jarvis Cocker's first full-length post-Pulp album is truly a modern classic. With lyrics that read like novellas, raw punk instrumentation augmented by lush strings and choirs, this is a hugely impressive pop package. "From Auschwitz To Ipswich" is a concise observation of global religious tension with a withering final line. "Black Magic" is Phil Spector's Wall Of Sound bulldozed by Euro electro-pop, while "Disney Time" is beautifully chilling. Darker still is "I Will Kill Again", though Cocker deftly lifts the mood with the optimistic "Baby's Coming Back To Me". Richard Hawley's guitar impresses throughout, never more so than on the splendidly ramshackle "Fat Children". The provocative download-only song, "Running The World", is hidden away at the end of the CD like a guilty pleasure, being blunt beyond accepted pop protocol.
