Out There: "Not of This Earth" is one of the first releases from Joe Satriani, and from this album you can hear why he has been embraced by hordes of listeners. Satch took music back to the focus on the guitar after such pioneers as Don Wilson and Bob Bodle of The Ventures and Dick Dale - no singing, just instrumentals fronted by the guitar. When Satch picked up the guitar, people listened. The album starts off with the spacey title track, that leads us on a journey of far out music. Although fairly mainstream today, this was a very experimental music when it first came out, and the title track hits right upon that. "Rubina" first appears on this album. The song for his wife moved him in a large step towards his own fame. The slow, well phrased song is a powerful example of Satch's composing ability, and rises the expectations for future releases from him. Another of his slow songs is "Brother John", the echoing guitar becomes a playground for his ability to solo alone without anyone else. Not only can he be slow and soulful, but he can turn up the notch and get crazy with "The Enigmatic" and the galloping rhythm and speed of "The Headless Horseman". "Hordes of Locusts" fits the Heavy Metal feel of the day. With this album, Satch already proves to us there is nothing that he cannot do. To start one's solo career on such a high note, you can hear how he had nowhere else to go but up. Satch's wonderful career pretty much starts here, and is worth a listen.
