At Last a Good Modern Vibrations Text: This is the first good vibrations book and reference since Den Hartog's Mechanical Vibration, 1952. Because of its structured organization, the book is suitable for an undergraduate or graduate text, or is ideal as a reference for a practicing engineer. The book is unique from many perspectives including the author`s exceptional historical grasp of the field of vibrations and mechanics. He presents the practice and theory of vibrations as the legacy of real engineers and scientists. The introductory chapter provides an historical review of the subject's development, with subsequent biographical insertions throughout. The book is also unique in its design-philosophy orientation. The encyclopedic collection of examples and example problems are invariably based on real engineering systems and reflect the author's high regard for the design process and many years of experience as a practicing engineer and consultant. Chapters 1 through 5 cover aspects of single-degree of freedom vibration problems including frequently neglected issues such as general forms for damping and static and dynamic stability. Chapter 6-8 cover multi-degree-of-freedom systems with lumped-mass formulations. Chapter 9 introduces continuous systems and their governing partial differential equations with chapter 10 presenting numerical methods for vibration analysis. The book through chapter 10 would cover the outline of most competitive vibration books, although with a distinctly different vision and vitality. The balance of the book tends to cover topics of more specialized interests including Rotor Dynamics, Nonlinear Vibrations, Design, Signal Processing, and Monitoring and Diagnostics. This wonderful book can be read and studied (productively) at many levels. A beginner can learn about simple vibration problems and the pervasiveness of vibration phenomena in the world. A graduate course can be built around the book, and a practicing engineer can use the Table of Contents and Index to look up virtually any topic relating to Vibrations. The extensive lists of references and recommended reading is a useful complement in researching specific topics.
A good undergraduate 'Vibration' textbook: I teach the course 'Mechanical Vibration'for undergraduate students at fourth semester, Department of Mechanics, Fudan University. I'd like to find a modern textbook in which not only the rigorous bacis theory, but also the vivid application examples and practical exercises should be included. This book meets my requirements well. The comprehensive contents offer students a solid theoretical fundation. The practical examples enable students to gain perceptual knowledge. The numerical methods and practicable programme make students can realize and practise the methods. A lot of drill exercises, extracted from engineering design problems, appear at the end of every chapter. The historical notes are the special content of the book. So this is a very good book. I recommend it highly.
A good textbook for undergraduate Vibration education: I teach the course "Mechanical Vibration" for undergraduate student of Department of Mechanics. Fudan University. I'dlike to find a modern textbook in which not only the serious basic theory, but also the vivid application examples and practical exercises should be included. This textbook meets my requirements well. 1.The contents of the book are comprehensivw and serious, which offers the studends a solid theoretical fundation. 2.Alot of practical engineering examples enable the studends to gain a perceptual knowledge during their theoretical study. 3. Offers many practical methods and programme, which make students can realize and practise these methods. 4. There are a lot of drill exercises, extracted from practical engineering design problems,at the ends of every chapter. 5. Gives some very important historical notes, which is this book's special than others in the field. So I recommend the textbook highly.
The second edition is much better than the first: This is the second edition of a very good textbook on 'Vibration for Engineers'. The reader could find a good theoretical background on vibrations, and many exercises taken from practical engineering design problems. Software programs are also given in order to be used as a virtual laboratory on vibrations. I believe that, although some typos need correction, the textbook can be very useful in hands of design-experienced and oriented instructors, for undergraduate courses.
