Once Upon A Time (Zebra Regency Romance Anthology) (ISBN 0821759957)

Categories:

A mixed anthology:
I loved Carola Dunn's version of Rumplestiltskin. The hero is literally a child of a fairy with uncertain magic, the heroine is a country girl with her nose to the figurative spinning wheel who seems to almost realize she is reliving a story she once read somewhere. It's a neat little retelling of a familiar story. Lansdowne's retelling of Repunzel isn't quite as successful. It's cute but a bit silly. And Hocker's Little Match Seller made the least impression of the three novellas.

Okay, It's Not For Everyone, But Maybe It's For You:
Hmmm. Well, I don't quite agree with the other reviewers, but perhaps I'm not the best one to ask because I tend to adore anything of the fairy tale persuasion. First off, you need to understand exactly what this book is. It's not your average regency romance where everything is logical and proper with a cup of tea to go with it. This is a book of fairy tales that happen to be set during the regency time period in England. There is magic and stuff that just isn't reasonable...like a fairy tale, which is ok because that is what it is. Some people who love regency romance will not like this book and that's totally fine with me. But there are some people who perhaps like fantasy, fairy tales, and magical happily ever afters out there...and this is the book for you. P.S. If I had it to do over, I would buy this book for the Rumplestiltskin retelling alone.

Ludicrous!:
I don't always mind a romance book that has a theme going but this is just plain silly! I Made the mistake of buying this along with Once Upon A Kiss while in a used book store looking for romance book companions that have short stories by several different romance book authors and I just don't like Once Upon a Kiss or Once Upon A Time but especially Once Upon A Time, now I really like fairy tales but making Rumplestilskin which was about a nasty and scary little troll who wanted to take a woman's baby away into a romance is ludicrous and the other stories are ludicrous too! What's next in ludicrous romance book ideas, Snow White's evil step-mother and the magic mirror turned into a real man? Now I have a relative who's always saying don't judge a book by it's cover and don't judge a story by it's title but with this and the other book you really can, they are just too hokey! These authors have done much better! Sorry but I just prefer a themed romance book companion that doesn't insult a girl's intelligence!

It's Books Like This That Give Romance Books A Bad Rep!:
I usually really enjoy reading these types of romance books that have short stories by different writers so when I saw this book in a store I picked it up and purchased it and I hated it! This book just wasn't for me because I thought it was horrible and a big waste of money but I respect that other reviewers have actually enjoyed reading this book as after all everyone is entitled to their own opinions. BTW: I have read better stories by Dunne, Hocker and Landsdowne in other romance books. It's books like this that give the romance genre a bad name!
