What a Book!: What a legacy! What a man! What a ministry! What a God he served. As the Bible says, his works continue to speak even though he (Dr. Peale) is no longer in this dimension. This book describes his secret. He writes, "...the simple affirmation of the love of God combined with human love possesses an astonishing healing property. Just love people in the name of Christ and in His spirit, and there is a released power that within itself possesses the power to induce healing." Like his other writings, he lays out the principles, and tells how he implements them in his own life. He talks about a man named Dave Henderson who "was a blessing to everyone he met." Now that's a worthy goal! Dr. Peale makes it clear he is not talking about self-reliance, but Jesus reliance when he states, "it is belief--not belief in yourself--but belief in Jesus Christ that gives power." Another common theme reinforced in this book, as in his other writings, is God's guidance. It is a promise of Scripture. Dr. Peale gives examples of how he's experienced this in his own life. He continually emphasizes that "self-improvement" is only possible through God's power. "The name of Jesus is sacred beyond all names," he writes. This book will enhance your life because it will teach you how to use faith in Jesus to draw upon the power of God to radically change your life in practical matters.
Peale, A.A., and A.A.'s Dr. William D. Silkworth on the Great Physician: I won't gild the lilly by repeating the applause in the first review. Though I heartily agree with that reviewer. I prefer instead to call attention to the unique value of this particular Peale book as showing the relevance of reliance on the Creator, receiving the power of Jesus Christ as one of God's kids, and achieving victory over alcoholism by this route. Peale tells a little known story I quote in several of my A.A. own history titles. It is about Dr. William D. Silkworth, who treated A.A. co-founder Bill W., had little success from a medical standpoint, and called Bill's attention to the Great Physician. That part of the story comes from the new biography of Dr. Silkworth. But the significant part is that Peale verifies that Dr. Silkworth actually recommended the Great Physician Jesus Christ as the "physician" needed for healing. In other words, todays AAs have been flooded with the newly minted treatment idea that you can be an AA and believe nothing at all. And of course, you can. But that's not the way early AAs viewed the picture. They believed in God. They accepted Jesus Christ. And they looked to the Creator in the name of His son for healing and cure. More important, they were cured in large numbers. Norman Vincent Peale was a long-time friend of A.A., a friend of A.A.'s Bill Wilson, and a friend of Dr. William D. Silkworth. And this particular inspirational book by Peale spells out for those who want to hear it that the program that Peale, Silkworth, A.A. co-founder Dr. Bob, and, briefly, A.A. co-founder Bill Wilson espoused was a program of Divine Aid. This Peale book, coupled with Mitchel's new biography of Silkworth, can open your eyes to the part of A.A. that has been thrown out the door in much of A.A.'s literature and talk of today--the power of Jesus Christ.
