Excellent Source: This is not the prettiest book nor is it the most clearly written. However, it is an excellent survey of techniques in precision engineering. Slocum clearly understands his stuff and trys to cover it in a reasonably comprehensive manner.
Disappointing book: This book is heavy, expensive, and printed in very small type that is hard to read. The graphics are of poor quality. Moreover, it is in the same sort of rambling, random style that Prof Slocum lectures in. I found the book minimally helpful.
Remarkable Book: There may be some issues with the presentation of the information in this book, but it is nevertheless a wonderful resource. Slocum is not attempting to provide an easy reference for general machine design. Instead, he provides us with a focused examination of the principles and techniques of the more esoteric aspects of the art. You will find mounds of useful stuff in this book that is available nowhere else.
