Under the Sun is surprisingly subtle in its rhythm and pace, gently unfolding as the author explores the relationship between the two main characters. One moment, the reader is lulled by the promise of paradise on a tropical island. The next, they are caught in the tension, on edge as the drama unfolds. The book is both well-researched and historical, but the author's light touch allows the reader to appreciate the cultural differences rather than feel overwhelmed by them. I'd like to see more from this author.
