Not to be judged by its cover...: I really looked forward to this book. Even ordered it before it was released. But, now that I've received it, I'm more then a bit disappointed. The problem is this: The title of the book, the cover and the well done introduction all are focused on how furniture makers are utilizing digital technologies in their work. It got me interested. Seems reasonable to expect the content to be there, too. The problem is, once you're past the cover and the intro the book is just another book showing off examples of several contemporary furniture makers' work. The work shown, with only one or two exceptions and a contributed essay has absolutely nothing to do with digital technologies in furniture making, whether in the design phase or construction process and most important if you believe the title as I did, how these new tools are opening up new creative paths. Other than these very thin contributions, it's just another studio furniture book. That's really too bad, as there are craftsman out there that are really using digital tools to both design and actually create interesting new furniture. There's a lot of ways this could have been handled in a book, both in techniques or design or exploring the philosophical questions of digital vs. traditional. If that's what you want to see in this book as I did, it just isn't here.... Too bad.
