Excellent companion piece to PBS documentary: It's the personal stories of the victims of human trafficking, chronicled in this book, that really make an impact. How this can and does go on in our world today is beyond many of our imaginations, and yet it needs to be brought into the light, the perpetrators exposed and dealt with, and the victims saved and rehabilitated. This book contributes greatly to shedding the much needed light. The authors have done an excellent and thorough job of explaining the history as well as the facts of this deplorable trade. This book is an excellent companion piece to the human trafficking documentary airing on PBS.
Great book, about a problem not many people talk about: This book is a primer on human trafficking, it explains how women and children are lured into this tragic vicious circle because of bad living conditions in their countries. These people are the slaves of the 21st century and nobody talks about them. To add an insult to injury many people don't event want to know anything about the problem of human trafficking. The fact is that it is not a distant problem as its consequences are global. It is time for all of us to see these problems in a global context and not just as a problem of some remote poor countries. Trafficking is a lucrative business, which brings billions of dollars a year to international criminal organizations. That money is later used for various dirty purposes, including arms dealing for terrorists and various illegitimate military groups worldwide. It funds drug smugling and destroys societies, but most of all it ruins lives of thousands young women and children who are subjected to inhumane treatment and are subdued to nothing more than expendable goods. The authors offer both theory and true to life stories of victims of trafficking. This book is excellent for teaching. Professors who teach courses dealing with social plights of this century in sociology, political science and even psychology should consider this book. The book is concise and to the point but filled with invaluable information everyone should be aware of.
