The Black Girl's Guide to College Success: Excellent overall presentation of the challenges to women of color in higher education. Enlightening and encouraging.
Rewarding Read: purchased this for my daughter who's a sophomore in college and she says it's a must read. It helped her tremendously.
I wish someone gave me this book when I left for school: This book is PERFECT for girls getting ready to go off to college and most chapters would be extremely useful for girls already in college. Are you not black? Don't be fooled, this book could be a valuable resource for anyone. It's written in such a style that you'd think you were talking to your best friend and is well organized into chapters so that if you are looking for advice on something specific, it's easy to find. Walker discusses everything from moving into your dorm room freshman year to how to get an internship; from relationships troubles (both romantic and friendships)to studying abroad. She repeatadly notes that she does not claim to be an "expert" because everyone's experience is different and she tells you not only what worked and didn't work for her, but what worked and didn't work for many of her friends, as well. The last couple chapters delve deeper into what it's like to be a student of color at a college campus - dealing with racism, inferiority complexes, and how to deal with culture shock. Even if you were a straight A student that was a star athlete and Class President, this book gives you information on things that you'd never think about. I only wish someone had given me this 5 years ago when I went to college!
Great Book-But it's Paperback: I bought this as a High School graduation gift for my niece. Although I haven't asked my niece if she likes it yet, my sis told me that she carries the book all around the house reading it. So I say this book must be filled with great info for kids who are off to college. The one thing I was dissapointed with was it being paperback. I didn't notice that as a description when I placed my order.
Good book for all new undergrads: "The Black Girl's Guide to College Success: What No One Really Tells You About College That You Must Know" by Sheryl Walker is a handy guide for young Black women desiring to make the best of their college experience. The book has 12 chapters called "tips," which include must-needed ones like "Tip # 3: Study Daily" and "Tip # 4: Choose the Right Major (for you)." Other tips like "Tip#7: Study Abroad" are rarely talked about in books for new undergrads, and I liked that she devoted a chapter to discussing how traveling outside the States can enrich one's life. In addition to the overall tips, the book has dozens of side notes, which also have good advice for readers to remember as they do everything from decide what to bring for their dorm rooms to how to write that all-important resume. I found the 243-page book to be very well-written, funny at times, and informative.
