Five stars for the classic translation, two for this recording.:
As a committed (and struggling) Christian, I consider the KJV my most favorite translation today as it has most of my life. When I listened to it on audio, I stuck to the Scourby recording because it is the first bible recording on audio, it is the most loved Bible narration of all time, and he literally feels what he reads. But the disadvantages of the classic recording is that he accidentally makes a mistake in his reading every occasionally. So for precaution, I guess, I switched over to this recording. Don't get me wrong, Stephen is a committed Christian and Emmy winner. But this narration doesn't cut it for me. It doesn't hold a candle to the classic Scourby version for a number of reasons -- one, because he reads too fast; two, he makes no feeling for the most vital and critical verses in the Bible. An example is Isaiah 1:18 which quotes "Come now, and let us reason, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool." He flies through the verse quicker than shooting under a bridge on a freeway. Please assure yourself that I'm not condemning Johnston or his reading. I'm just saying you may need to listen hard before you can fully grasp what he's reading. And the music I can do well without. On the bright side, I yet have to find an 'accidental error' on his reading, like when you accidentally read the wrong word, such as 'thy' instead of 'the'. And the sound quality is high too. But I don't see how the technology benefits me at all. My recommendation is that if you would like to listen to this recording I would have to try to set everything off my mind before pushing the PLAY button. Otherwise the words will pass you by quickly and you may end up hitting the reverse button. But I would easily prefer both this and the dramatized recording and the over the cheesy dramatized Scourby version.

Good technology, exasperating narration:
I bought this audio bible because I wanted the King James Version, and the convenience of just three 3 CDs (as opposed to many CDs or cassettes in other versions) was appealing. Unfortunately, the narrator reads very quickly and without feeling. When I got to his version of Ecclesiastes I was astonished at how he raced through those moving and elegiac passages with an almost upbeat radio disc jockey tone. What's more, if you are not already familiar with a passage he is reading, it is difficult to hang on to the meaning as he rushes on. It's possible that it's worth dealing with the inconvenience of a multiple CD non-mp3 version. The Bible requires a narrator who sounds like he cares.
