I didn't see onions:
I got a copy of this book, looked at the Tuna Cakes recipe and it did not list onions. Also in the back of the book with the human recipes it informs to leave onions out of the cat's meal. Not sure why there is a difference but just wanted to inform that I didn't find onions in the recipes. ????

Are we all rating the same book?:
I bought a copy of this book and haven't seen any recipes that call for onions. Granted, I've only made about half the recipes so far, but I've seen nothing that will harm our cats. Two of the recipes I've made did call for garlic but the amount was so small that it wouldn't have any adverse effect. I've made the Tuna Cakes and the recipe did not call for onions. The fish chowder recipe makes 5 servings - no mention of onion, and only one clove of garlic was needed. I'm also pleased about the various safety tips throughout the book. I recommend this book to all. Useless:
There are no serving sizes per recipe of by weight of cat. Calories are missing. How can I feed my cats a healthy diet without this vital information?

I was all set to purchase this book in a grocery store after reviewing the contents and wanting to provide a healthy alternative for my cats. I had NO idea that onions are not safe for cats, even though I've had one for almost my entire life. If nothing else, you saved two cats! Thanks! And Amazon, get this off your shelves! Here's a great tip for everyone: NEVER buy anything until you read the reviews on Amazon first! This isn't the first time a review has saved me from making a bad buying decision!

Caveat Emptor:
This book is based on a great premise, and one that became very pertinent not too long ago due to the petfood scares. The idea is that people can make their own cat food instead of buying it prepackaged and canned, or even slightly alter some "people" recipes to make them good for your cat. Many reviewers pointed out that the original version of this book contained recipes with onions in them, and that onions and garlic are toxic to cats and cause anemia and possibly death. There is a second edition out (a revised edition) which has removed the onions from the non-people recipes, but still contains garlic. The point remains that this book (even in its first edition) was touted as "Vet Approved" and yet clearly could not have been recommended by any vet worth their salt. It's debateable whether or not the corrected recipes are harmful to cats, or even particularly healthful. It is up to the individual reader to decide what is best for their own pets.
