Beautiful book but many gaps in information for Americans.: Hawthorne's book will be a must for buyers more interested in books on the topic of roses than in comprehensive information on the care and maintenance of the flowers themselves. Americans, in my opinion, will find themselves lost in the text because few of the miniatures familiar to them are mentioned or pictured in the book. For rosarians in climates more hostile to rose culture than is Great Britain, there are gross omissions in very necessary information on diseases, pests and cultural practices. For example, there is no mention of RRD (Rose Rosette Disease), methods of winterizing, or the dreaded spider mite--the most destructive insect predator of minis in the USA. The cultivars are treated rather casually as to correct species names, hybridizers, availablity for purchase, hardiness. This last quality is very important in America with its radically differing temperature zones. I was disappointed in the scope of the book because good straightforward instructions specific to minis are in short supply.
