The Art of Simon Bisley: As an artist-Illustrator, mixed media colourist, and expressionists Bisley is unsurpassed. He never puts a mark wrong. His foregrounds and backgrounds explode and writhe within each frame. He is a master craftsman. That being said it is obvious that his subject matter targets males as it indulges the violent, the sexual and the bizarre. Boys will be boys! To me he is a major artist with elements of Goya, Grunweld and Carravagio, but more painterly and expressive.
not so many additions but it's Biz!: Not so much different from the original hc version. If you only buy this one anyway it's a great book full of great art. Biz is one of the best fantasy painters around!
Talent? Yes. Originality? Not really...: Perhaps it's a biproduct of age. You hear that new, hit song on the radio and you think "Well, that sounds like a bit of the Kinks and the chorus from that Beatles song". Or you see the latest hit "remake" movie and your younger friends have never seen the original and just love the remake. (Think "Planet of the Apes", or "The Day The Earth Stood Still"). Or you pick up this book and realize "Didn't I see something very similar to this in a Frank Frazetta painting?" Granted, artists have been ripping off (or is that "influenced by"?) Frazetta even before you saw your first "Silver Warrior" painted on the side of a Chevy van or Boris Vallejo started having bodybuilders model for him. Bisley has good drawing skills, as well as an apparent obsession with breast implants and cameltoe. Don't get me wrong, some of this work is truly exciting, but even more of it is dark and muddy with poor composition. Personally, I see too many not so good Frazetta rip offs to feel it is truly original artwork worthy of praise. If you're a teenage male, this might be an enjoyable little book. But do yourself a favor and look into the source - Frank Frazetta.
Crappy Binding: Heavy Metal Hardcover and soft cover books are known to have bad binding. This book and it's previous version are in my library falling apart. Art is great though.
