Tarot Sutra: An Intimate Guide to the Secret Language of Sex

Categories:

Fun book, with a caveat or two:
The book was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed the read. It had some great ideas, some goofy ones, and ones that went directly on the list of "things to try out at once!" I'd originally purchased the set in the interest of finding a new and different tarot deck-- and was very disappointed to find that the deck included is just a stripped-down variation on the standard Rider-Waite deck. Some of the suggestions were a little tame; a previous reviewer noted that the book is useless for anyone with an imagination. I wouldn't call the reviewer wrong, but I wouldn't call him/her right, either. If you're looking for some new ideas, it's worth a look. If your life is pretty adventurous already, you might not need this, or want to spend the money. On the other hand, it can certainly be used as a checklist! I got the set on sale, and it was certainly worth the sale price. Not sure if I'd purchase it again, if I had to pay full price.

Silly sex guide for the unevolved:
Poor application of TAROT, an unfortunate camel (horse by committee), this creation has some good writing in the serious tarot portion, if you're very tenatious looking for it. It's ruined by the "suggestions". They range from stating the obvious to absurdities. From the Judgement Card: "...make love in a mausoleum while listening to music by Louis Armstrong.", Yeah, OK. Also, likening the face cards to famous people: The Fire Kings, "Passionate, raw, and easily riled.", includes Confucius and Al Gore. How about the Earth Kings, "...small hands and usually well endowed." Mel Gibson and Stephen Hawking? Was this personal research? Cards would still be usefull if they didn't have nudes on the back. Can't use them in public without causing unwanted attention. Bought at full price, sending it to the dump, can't think of anyone I'd inflict it on.

Poor quality cards, silly content:
First, the cards are a re-colored version of the Smith-Rider-Waite (ISBN: 091386613X) deck, but the colors are very odd and clash with the traditional understanding of the imagery. Second, the cards are almost paper thin, have no protective coating, and the edges still have those little bits of paper where you can see that they were separated from perforated edges of other cards. Third, what the authors have done is basically to take the traditional understanding of each card and come up with their own ideas about how to apply the meaning sexually - they offer no real insight, only ideas that you could come up with by yourself, and you would do a better job applying it to your own love life. Bottom line, this is just another "let's get on the bandwagon and make something with the words sex and tarot in it to sell for a quick buck" product with no real knowledge, insight, or even basic quality of paper involved. I returned it the same day I got it. You'd do better to get a sex game from your local adult bookstore.

A New Way to use tarot:
I really like it as an interesting and it is refreshing to see a deck that isn't just one more deck done by an artist but is used to show a different way to use your tarot deck. The box is really neat sturdy heavy cardboard and plastic with a fun magnetic closure. Unfortunately they do not have a separate box for the deck itself (one of my personal pet peeves) But all in all this is one of the nicest box for a deck and book set that I have ever seen and you def won't toss that box out. On the cover of the box it shows two naked bodies (artfully air brushed and black and white without the faces showing) While showing the people it still stays on the side of tasteful. It is funny though that the box looks so racy but the cards are a recolored version of the Rider Waite. I do with that they would have either created a deck that matched what the box is implying (sex and lots of it!) Or that the cards that are included didn't include the racy shot of the cover of the box for there card backs and also the keyword captions underneath that can be a little R rated. I do love the coloring of this deck as they have gotten rid of all the yellow and orange skies of the Rider Waite and have done with more blues, pinks and purples. I haven't gotten far with the book yet but it is very entertaining with ideas of what you can do with your partner and each card has an essential oil, color, romantic music and edible foods to share with your partner. While I can't see myself doing 99% of the things in the book but I could see pulling a card a querent who is having problems with a stale sex life. The book is paperback but is printed in color which I really like so that you can refer to the card as you read about it and know what colors the cards are without having to find that card in the deck to compare. My one qualm is with the quality of the cards. While they are standard size the card stock is very thin (there was some sticky stuff on one card when I opened the box and just trying to wipe it off scratched the card) also there are bumps left on the sides of the cards where they were punched out of the paper they were printed on. the other thing I could wish for was that if they were going to use the RW deck that they could have left the sexy keywords and the racy backs off so that I could use the deck to read for others with cause the recoloring is very attractive. On closing, I think this is a really great tarot deck and book set. It bring up the subject of a persons sexuality in a non threatening way and allows people to talk about things that normally we might be to shy and embarrased show. The box is great and the artwork is really attractive and it brings up some great ideas for different ways to use a tarot deck. If your looking for a deck to rev up your sex life or want to see how even a rider waite deck can be used in a new and sexual liberating way, check this deck out.
