Good for a while and now very DISAPPOINTED!: We purchased this printer about two years ago. Here's my outline of a review: Pros: 1. Scans easily with decent quality 2. Easy to change ink cartridges 3. Great for quick copying 4. Good print quality Cons: 1. Sucks up ink faster than a hungry baby sucks down a bottle. This gets worse as time goes on. 2. After only 2 years of moderate use, the paper feeders are not working. This is the second Epson printer I've owned with this problem. It worked fine with no sign of trouble, and then all of the sudden, one day the rollers stopped! My old one did the same thing. I'm very disappointed and will not likely buy another Epson printer. I've had an HP laser (black printing only) for many years and haven't had any trouble with it. My two cons far outweigh the four pros. Buying a new printer every 1-2 years is not acceptable and the cost of ink for what you get is high. Here's a tip on buying ink - go directly through Epson. They often offer free shipping (keep watching for those deals) and their prices are often less than local retailers. I always purchased multiples of each color since this printer uses it so quickly. Unfortunately now, I'm stuck with new cartridges that I cannot use because the printer is not working! I'm extremely disappointed with Epson right now.
Call it Dracula!: Do NOT buy this printer unless you can afford LOTS of ink. Before the CX5000, I had never owned an Epson but had used them. I knew they were good quality and loved the idea of separate ink cartridges for color. Just recently, I had to replace all four cartridges at the same time. I did four head cleanings (the print heads seem to be HEAVILY clogged) and the cartridges were empty. OK. Head cleanings can use a lot of ink. But all of the ink in my color cartridges? Don't bother with this printer. I already miss my far inferior but far MORE reliable Lexmark Z-series. It still works after seven years and doesn't use a fraction of the ink.
Beware manufacturing defect! update . . . still no relief: I will soon be rid of my THIRD replacement Epson CX5000! Within days of getting the first one, the printer SEEMED to be out of ink. So - at the usual outrageous price, I replaced them. But after only a few prints, those too were out of ink. I called Epson to complain that I had only made a few prints and that once again I was out of ink. They sent me replacement inks, but again, in a very short time, I was out of ink. This time they told me that some of their ink cartridges were defective and would indicate that they were out of ink when they weren't - they replaced them again, with the same result after a short time. Then they replaced the CX5000 with another CX5000, which fairly quickly exhibited the same symptoms Soon, that one was replaced by a CX5000 that did exactly the same thing. This time I refused to go through trouble-shooting steps with another 'tech support' person in India with whom communication was difficult and who could do nothing but offer me another defective printer. I insisted on - and eventually got - someone in the states who listened to my story and is going to send me a different model of printer. The trouble seems to start when one has to clean the heads. Unlike printers I've had in the past, you can't override the ink indicator and keep on printing until you actually run out, but MUST replace the cartridges - whether or not they really need replacement - in order to operate the printer. I am fairly sure that Epson is aware of this problem, and are dodging their responsibility to take it off the market, or recall those in customers' possession, etc. I do love the durabright inks, though, and I'm fussy, because as an artist, I must have consistent color and quality. The scanner is also excellent. Update: I am still waiting for my fourth replacement printer. This time I've been promised an entirely different model. However it is over a week overdue and when I called them to ask about it, they assured me my brand new cx5000 would be shipped soon!! I objected, and they said OK - I'd be getting a different model. I wouldn't be at all surprised, though, if they sent me another cx5000. Epson IS AWARE of the manufacturing defect in this printer and is stonewalling. Anyway, I won't buy another epson ever again. UPDATE #2: After weeks of waiting for the RX680 that Epson sent me to replace the (THREE) defective Epson cx5000s I've been fighting with for a year, it arrived today and I installed the software and put in the ink, etc. All I got for my trouble was an error message saying ERROR - printer does not recognize cartridge for the pink ink. I called Epson and they are sending me a new cartridge. But if past Epson performance is any guide, I am fairly sure it is the PRINTER. I checked the amazon reviews for the RX680 and those who had this problem had to have the printer replaced. It does seem that those who are blessed with a WORKING rx680 are VERY happy with it. So there's hope of a sort. I don't know how long it will take Epson to get around to admitting this one is defective and send me another printer, but meantime, I've been looking around for a dependable scanner/printer/copier (NOT an Epson). Any ideas????
BEWARE: not worth the money!!!: The print quality is bad with frequent stutters and blurs. It has poor compatibility with Adobe Photoshop on a Mac. And as many others have noted, it consumes a huge amount of ink! About the only good thing I can say about the Epson Stylus CX5000 is that the scan quality is good. Other than that, it's a complete waste of money.
Another EPSON Product that Breaks: Purchased this printer to replace an older EPSON printer that stopped feeding paper. Should have learned my lesson. A little more than a year later this printer stops feeding paper too. Called EPSON and without proof of purchases they told me I'd have to pay to have it repaired and they offered a website for discounted EPSON products. I'd say I use my printer less than the average person. There's no reason why this should have broke already. Unfortunately the CX5000 will be the last EPSON product I'll own.
